The second step of identifying the authenticity of diamond is by having a closer look at it. Real diamonds possess high refractive indexes so one test which can be done is to shine a light through it. If the gem on the jewellery sharply bends the light, then the diamond is real.

For diamonds mounted on jewelleries, one way to test it is to turn the piece upside down with the stone lying on the surface of the newspaper with writing. If the text on the page can be read through the stone or black smudges can be seen, then the diamond is a fake. Another characteristic of fake diamonds is double refraction. Most fake diamonds are made of Moissanite, a silicon carbide, which is so close to diamonds that even appraisers have a hard time distinguishing the two from each other. To look for double refraction, have a closer look at the topside of the stone where the facets are. If a double vision is observed in the facets, then the gem has a double refraction effect.

Another way of scrutinizing whether the diamond mounted on the jewellery piece is not real is by observing the reflections on the stone. The reflections of real diamonds only manifest in shades and blurs of grey. If rainbow reflections are observed, then the stone is either a low-quality diamond or a fake. A microscope can also be used as a tool in identifying diamond’s authenticity by simply holding the stone with the top facet down. If an orange flash is observed on the stone when the facets are moved then the gem is not real. Another tool that can also be used is UV light. Real diamonds give off blue fluorescence when put under black or ultra violet light. Putting the gem in water is also an effective and easy test. If the diamond jewellery sinks then the stone is real.
