Thanks to tax breaks and cash incentives created by the British Government to encourage oil companies to further exploration, new reserves of oil have been found by British company, Rockhopper. Whist this is good news for the industry as a whole, it is also a welcome announcement for those looking to pursue oil and gas jobs.

Fuel for the Future

If it is confirmed that Rockhopper’s find is a significant one, then is very likely to have a positive ripple effect through the oil recruitment industry. The find is the culmination of Rockhopper Exploration’s drilling program near the Falkland Islands. The drilling itself has sparked some controversy, as Argentina is once again claiming sovereignty over the islands. However, for the British oil and gas industry, the find appears to be a positive one. According to a Rockhopper spokesman, the find is a “high quality reservoir interval with very good porosity and permeability.”

Potentially, this discovery could yield more than 450million barrels of oil, which is a find offering more than many oil fields in the North Sea. Rockhopper’s next focus is to analyse data from the well, carry out more drilling and implement a flow test. This in itself will require extra staff, but it is the creation of further gas jobs and oil careers that has sparked so much interest from oil recruitment sectors.

The Past Forges the Future

During the recession, the oil and gas industry chose to freeze workers’ wages, rather than to force redundancies. While many other industries – particularly the banking industry – chose to streamline their workforces, the oil and gas industries held onto their staff and waited for the financial furore to pass. Now that the global economy has stabilised, the oil and gas industry is able to reap the benefits of its action by returning to work without having to go through the oil recruitment process.

The find by Rockhopper means that their company will have to recruit more workers, both in front line and management capacities. In effect, the knock-on effect of any find is to create more oil careers and gas careers in the industry. With the Falkland Islands find offering such a high potential yield, the field will require testing, developing and, ultimately, processing. As each stage of the refinement process is implemented, more oil and gas jobs will be created. In addition, it must be realized that these are not short-term opportunities. If Rockhopper’s data reveals – as Richard Rose of Oriel Securities predicts – “a decent quality reservoir”, then there is likely to be demand for workers in all departments for years to come.

In addition, the presence of oil in this area would suggest that there are others nearby. Further exploration of the locality is needed to ascertain whether this is part of a larger field, one of many or an isolated occurrence. Whatever the results are, it means that British workers looking for oil jobs or gas jobs can expect to see a number of vacancies arising in the near future as operations escalate and consumer demand increases.
