While it is known as Infant Colic, Infantile Colic, Baby Colic, and Three-Month Colic, Colic has been defined as a severe spasmodic abdominal pain while other resources consider Colic as a condition where a healthy baby cries or screams on a frequent basis for extended periods of time during a specific period of time (usually in the early evening) without any apparent reasons. Colic often appears about three weeks after the baby is born and suddenly disappears before the baby turns three to four months old, much to the confusion of worried parents all over the world. If you do have a Colicky baby, you can gently soothe your baby with a gentle rocking or bouncing, actions that lead to a parasympathetic response, endorphin production, therefore calming the baby in the process. In addition to these soothing methods, you can also employ other soothing measures such as using pacificers, listening to white noise and rocking are effective in calming your baby during these crying periods while some parents take turns holding the baby upright as a measure to help the baby reduce his or her crying or pain, giving the other parent to catch up on his or her sleep. While Colic is self-limited and episodic, you should avoid medications and other treatments unless you have discussed these options with your baby’s doctor.
