A weapon should be an extension of you. This is exactly what martial arts practitioners believe and teach when they are giving fighting lessons to their students. However, the same applies in any kind of sports. The instruments that we use in sports should not be a style statement but an extension of ourselves and therefore you should know which instruments fits you well. For instance, if you are playing golf you select the right kind of club to make the right kind of shot and for a fraction of a second that golf club becomes the extension of you. Similarly, if you enjoy surfing than you need to know more about surf board because surf boards are not just your style statement but an extension of your body that should move as you want it to move.
Even before you jump into the water with your surf board you need to understand the basics of surfing and different kinds of surf boards because surfing can be a dangerous sport if you venture into the sea without any knowledge about it. There are different kinds of surf boards available and therefore you should know how to differentiate between them. Beginners are very excited when they purchase their surf boards and they normally checkout the funky designs but there is more to it than meets the eye. Hence, make sure that you are selecting the right kind of surf board for yourself that you can handle in the sea.
Though, there are various kinds of surf boards each one has its own positive and negative points. However, you can categorize surf boards as soft boards, long boards and short boards. If you are new to surfing, than go for soft boards because they are more stable and comfortable for beginners. The boards are made up of soft foam and therefore they are always floating on the water and prevent any injuries if the surfer is not able to balance himself on the surf board while practicing. Soft boards are generally longer in length because they provide greater stability.
Long boards are best when you have mastered soft boards. You would usually find an intermediate surfer having a long board because they are comparatively heavier than the soft boards. The length of long boards are usually almost the same as soft boards because it provides more stability to the surfer but the weight of the long board is something that the surfer has to manage on its own. Intermediate surfers prefer heavier surf boards which are made up of fiberglass.
Short boards are made for experienced surfers and they are really fast. The short size of the surf board gives more flexibility to the surfer to move whichever way he wants to move. However, they are extremely risky because the surfer has to keep his balance or he would fall down. Short boards are also made up of fiberglass and are a bit heavier that soft boards but they can be very frustrating when you are trying them for the first time.
