Dressing For a Cookout
The backyard barbecue is a traditional summer event in all of America, and a fun way to spend time with friends, family, or even colleagues, get some fresh summer air and indulge in the all American fare of hot dogs, hamburgers, and beer. While summer cookouts are such a typical feature, it is not unusual for a lot of people to be unsure about what to wear to these outdoor parties. Dressing for a cookout is not really that hard if you keep some basic tips in mind.
First, find out what the occasion is. If it’s a family get together, or friends meeting for a casual summer cookout, a pair of jeans and a T-shirt would do just fine. If it’s a pre-wedding cookout, or a company picnic, you will need to look more carefully into the question of attire.
Check your invitation or ask your host or hostess what to wear. Cookout attire can range from the semi-formal to extremely casual, so it’s best to be sure. Ask questions so that you turn out appropriately, especially if it’s an office or wedding kind of event.
The most important thing in the cookout is comfort. However classy the event might be, you will need to be comfortable in what you wear. A cotton sundress or a short-sleeved blouse and a pair of linen shorts would be good for the women while a casual pair of khakis and button down shirt for the men works well for the men.
If it’s a wedding you are attending, add a jacket to the sundress for the ceremony and remove it after the reception. The men could likewise add a tie to the ensemble for the ceremony part. If you are planning to wear a skirt, pick a non-khaki skirt and a pretty top or blouse along with sandals. Pick your shoes carefully. Wedding or no wedding, pointed heels are best avoided in the lawn. Choose a pair of flats or wedge heels.
Feet are best protected especially if the cookout is being held in a wooded area. There are a number of things you’d need to watch out for in such a situation: rocks, hot wood or sand, not to forget bugs and ticks. Closed toe shoes are the best bet for a cookout in a forested area.
Satay is an extremely popular food in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in Indonesia, the satay can be had from a traveling satay vendor, or from a street side satay, at a sophisticated restaurant, or at home during festivals. The Indonesians regard it as their national dish. In Malaysia too, the satay is popular throughout the country, especially during traditional feasts.
Check the weather forecast. Even if it’s summer, it could turn chill in the evening. Keep a wrap or a light sweater along, just in case. If there is rain on the cards, carry a raincoat or a rain poncho. Remember, comfort is always the key in a cookout.
