Film Training Tips – What Is The Right Length For A Good Movie?
When someone is first starting with movie of film making it is easy to get carried away with your dream and plans for a huge success. These film training tips will help you with the planning and preparation you need to be successful.
Before you start filming you will definitely want to map out how long your movie is going to be. That is what we are going to deal with in this article.
Do you want to know what one of the biggest mistakes beginning filmmakers make? Rookie filmmakers usually try stuffing everything into a movie and all of a sudden they have a six hour monster. The problem really is that rookies generally don’t have the skills or experience to make this work and the result is a mixed up mess.
Your goal may be a short film or a full length feature film, but in either case you want to avoid it rambling on. So, to help avoid this problem when you are first starting out you should make the movie shorter than you think you want it to be. Wouldn’t it be great to have your audience wanting more, who knows, maybe even a sequel. Possibly you might even considered leaving the ending unresolved enough so that it opens the door to making a sequel. Just remember, you can hardly give your viewing audience too little, but it’s easy to give them too much.
Here’s a good plan: Lay out the whole film using storyboards.
For example, here’s a murder mystery plot:
1. Act of murder is committed.
2. Policemen arrive on the scene.
3. Investigation begins.
4. Questioning of suspects.
5. Clue begin to surface.
6. Hints of who the murderer is start to surface.
7. Final clue reveals who the murderer is.
8. Murderer is then hunted and caught.
This is just the basics, but you get the idea of the plot. Once your storyboard is created, then you fill in some details, but sparingly. Remember that less is more. Don’t let it drag on and on. One way to tell if your movie will be too long is if you storyboard pages are long.
People want a film or movie that captures their attention from the beginning. So, while you want to have enough details to make a plot you don’t want to get so carried away with your creative juices that you forget your goal to keep your audience’s attention.
Try it out on friends, family and associates who aren’t involved with the making of the film. Getting some objective opinions will help you to see where the weak points are and what you can do to keep your film
interesting and avoid it getting it too long and drawn out.
Check out other films that you think are good and seem to do a good job of keeping the story moving along. Compare those films of some of those that seem to drag on and on and you will see what I mean.
To sum up our film training tips, your goal is to keep it short and simple, like a Hitchcock movie.
