How to Start a Career in Wedding Planning

A couple’s wedding day is one of the most important days of their lives. Much preparation goes into this day because in their eyes, everything needs to be perfect. If you love planning celebrations, are extremely organised and are great at personal interaction, then you might want to think about becoming a wedding planner.

Here’s how to start a career in wedding planning:

1.Gain some experience.

If you’re completely new to the world of wedding planning, then it would be best to gain some hands-on experience. Look for an established wedding planner and get in touch with him or her. Perhaps you can get a job on the wedding planner’s team or even volunteer to work for free in exchange for some experience. Be observant, take notes and ask a lot of questions.

2.Subscribe to bridal magazines.

Bridal magazines are a great source of information. You’ll get a great deal of ideas from reading through magazines. You will also be up to date on the latest wedding trends. You’ll be able to gain some perspective of who’s who in the wedding planning industry.

3.Do your research.

Make a list of as many wedding suppliers as you can find in your area. You’ll need contacts for churches, wedding venues, photographers and videographers. You’ll need invitation printers, jewellers, florists, caterers and bakeries. There are a lot of suppliers involved in a wedding. Make it your job to find out which suppliers are reliable. Also, know how much these suppliers cost.

4.Establish relationships with suppliers.

Once you’ve made a list of various suppliers in the industry, take the time to visit them one by one and introduce yourself. Let them know that you’re only starting out in the industry and would appreciate any form of help.

Perhaps these suppliers can refer you to their clients who are still in need of a wedding planner. Offer to conduct business with these suppliers and work out the pricing scheme if you bring your clients to them.

5.Advertise your business.

The best form of advertising is still word of mouth, especially when it comes to wedding planning. Women tend to ask friends and family for referrals for various wedding details. Ask your former clients to put in a good word for you with their network.

You may also want to advertise your services in the local papers and bridal magazines.

6.Join bridal fairs.

Bridal fairs are a great way to get your business recognised. Couples love bridal fairs because all the suppliers are gathered in just one location. Hand out calling cards to everyone who passes by. Make conversation and get yourself noticed. Offer discounted rates to couples who book your services at the fair itself.

7.Build up your portfolio.

The best way to build up your portfolio is to actually work on some weddings. Start with your personal network. Offer to do the weddings of your family members or friends. You may want to give them a very friendly rate in exchange for their business. One or two weddings might just be enough to get your business rolling.
