If you want to start your own online business, you need a website. In days past you might have been able to get away with just buying a domain name, or even basing yourself somewhere like myspace or facebook. While it is still possible to use those sites to promote things you like, it is not easy. There are too many people willing trying to push garbage on others, anyone LIKE YOU with something worth buying gets ignored because they see you as just another spammer, scammer.

The only way to be taken seriously is to use a website. There in lay the problem for many people who want to get started in online marketing. Even amongst those who are web savvy, most people do not know anything about building web sites. That’s where wordpress comes to play.

WordPress was created to make blogs, or web logs. It has grown far beyond that. By using plug-ins to modify the functions of the site you can build pretty much any kind of site you want. Using wordpress themes you can make the site look any way you want. Many excellent plug-ins and themes are available for free, and so is the base wordpress software.

The only thing it costs to get started is a domain name, web hosting, time and work. You can get very reasonable prices on hosting and domain names. The last package I bought was a nice hosting plan with free domain registration for 2 full years, and it cost me less than a hundred dollars. The rest depends on you.

Once you have a wordpress site there are three ways you can go with how to use it.
The first way is to just go with a blog site. Easy to set up because you don’t have to change wordpress at all to make one. It will get the job done “out of the box”. With a blog you basically talk about topics that interest you and recommend things to make money. Thus it is the most difficult method for making money with a wordpress site. The only thing that will attract people to your site is what you have to say.

The Second way is to create an E-Commerce based site. In this case you are taking advantage of how easy wordpress is to set up an modify. To do an e-commerce site you will need to get some plug-ins to make it easier for you to work with pages, rather than the posts wordpress focuses on. This type of set up is more like traditional web sites, with many pages attached to navigation. With WordPress acting as your management system. The amount of work involved in setting up the site is more difficult. However, since the focus of the site is selling things people already want, you can focus on promoting and marketing the site, rather than generating lots of original content. The hardest part is learning to sell things.

The third type is a hybrid of the two. A blog with posts of information and your opinions on and about the topic(s) is used as a draw for people to come to the site. You then provide a product, or products related to the topic(s). This is the most difficult type of site to set up with wordpress. You not only have to provide good, original content in order to attract people to the site. You also have to do all the work involved with setting up an e-commerce site, and marketing it as both. Not a method for beginners.

If you are new to online marketing and are searching for a way to get your feet wet, I highly recommend using a wordpress site.
