Making a Pet Memory Book

Pets are such an essential part of our lives. Having a companion animal offers health benefits, hours of entertainment, and a friendship that can last a lifetime. Alas, most of today’s most popular pets (cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, fish, lizards, etc.) have lifespans that are much shorter compared to humans’. Because of that, it’s essential to preserve the memory of your special furry friend with a pet memory book. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

1. Decide on what kind of book you’d like to use. You have a number of options regarding the book you choose for your project. You could purchase a blank journal or scrapbook, for example. Some of the journals on the market already have pet themes (i.e. a vintage photo of a kitty on the cover) and some scrapbook papers have animal designs on them. If you’re feeling especially creative, you can design your own pages in a computer program like Adobe Photoshop or InDesign, print the pages, and them bind them together with binding machine. Note: in this phase of your project, you should also procure any supplies you may need such as rubber cement, felt pens, stickers, etc.

2. Gather up your favorite photographs. Most of us take many pictures of our pets, so chances are good you have some favorites. Be sure to gather them up and, if you want, laminate them. Laminating them will preserve them and even enhance the colors in the photographs so your pet will look great for a long time to come. If you do choose to laminate, make sure you use a device that has a cold setting. Photographs can be damaged by heat, so make sure to run them through a cold cycle. If you find that you need to trim excess laminate from your pictures, you can use a rotary trimmer to take care of things.

3. Begin to put your book together. Once you’ve got your photographs together and your supplies all picked out, you’re ready to start putting your book together. Whether you’ve chosen to chronicle your pet’s life from being a kitten or puppy to his/her golden years or you’re putting together a “greatest hits” of your animal’s funniest or cutest moments, there’s no wrong way to do this. You can include pictures, a bit of your pet’s fur, his/her collar, or anything else that captures the essence of your critter. Just let your creative juices flow and you’re going to wind up with a beautiful, touching tribute to your pet.

One more thing: be sure the paper you use for your project is archival and acid-free. That way your creation will last for years. Also, be sure to place in the book in a somewhat prominent area of your home. If you do so, you’ll be able to keep the memory of your companion alive.

Losing a pet is extremely hard, but creating a memory book can honor your furry little friend. Good luck to you and, if you have any other critters, be sure to give them an extra scratch behind the ears. (And make a book for them too!)
