Probably the only beach town on the ‘Gold Coast’ that has remained unaffected by the coastal development that has infiltrated other beaches, Playa Grande is located in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. Though this town is not extremely modern, the beauty that meets your eyes as you walk down the coastline makes you forget about the modern world. The absolute beauty of this place remains in the fact that it remains quiet and peaceful at night irrespective of the activities that occur during the day. As there is no traffic as such, the whole town has a serene atmosphere.

Best Time to Travel

The weather is pleasant throughout the year. One of the main attractions of this place is the nesting ground of the giant leatherback turtle. Playa Grande along with Tamarindo are amongst the first places to protect these nesting grounds. If you plan well, you can make sure you get to watch the turtles laying their eggs. The beach is just a few steps from the town and the view that meets your eyes is breathtaking. There are a few restaurants and hotels present by the beach side and if you book in advance you can get yourself a nice room overlooking the coastline. The northern end has the Playa Grande estates which has a small community of its own. Restaurants and hotels are also present on the southern end where you can live in beach houses for average rates.

Surf Like Kings

The main reason to come to Playa Grande is surfing. This place has the biggest waves and also the fastest. If you are a surfing freak then you will be overjoyed the moment you get there. The bottom is sandy so there are no threats of rocks. The waves are for surfers but in the morning time you can stroll to the beach for a quick swim. The surf beaches are mainly present in the river mouth region. As the beach is extremely long, stretching out for miles and miles, you don’t ever feel crowded. Get yourself a good spot and you can be rest assured of getting a good tan. Many beaches actually cut beautifully through the foliage but the view is hard to spot from the beach as there are buildings blocking the view. You can get your own surfboards or you can rent some once you get here. Since the waves can be a bit rough sometimes, it is better you get equipment that you are used to. It is also believed to have to most consistent surfs in these parts.

Be One with Nature

People who love the beach will feel right at home here. Other water sports are also available though the equipment for them is generally hard to find. Land activities like hiking and roaming through the beautiful foliage make this spot a hit among land lovers. You can spend the entire day having fun, but make sure you get a nice reserved spot by evening to watch the sun set.
