The R4 DS Turns Your Nintendo DS Into a Full Blown PDA With DSOrganize

Whenever I get my hands on a new piece of hardware, the first thing I do is see what it can really do. Not just the functions that can be performed based on what’s on the box. It was no different when I first received my R4 DS Card. I quickly went online to see just what this whole nds homebrew gaming was all about.

I had read about some really cool applications for the DS and DSi. The one that caught my eye the most was something called DS Organize or DSOrganize. This little handy piece of software for the Nintendo DS and DSi actually turns your hand held gaming system into a full blown portable PDA up to par with many PALM or Windows Mobile personal digital assistants.

It’s something that I honestly feel should have been built right into the Nintendo DS, or at the very least, the new DSi console, but it was not. It just seems totally natural to me to actually use the DS that I’m carrying around with me anyway, to serve and function like more of a multi purpose device. The DS is certainly powerful enough to run a full blown organizer. Heck, most low end cell phones have this functionality built in, even if it is in a very limited form.

But DS Organize is anything but limited. Once you put it on to your R4 DS and load it up on the Nintendo DS, you’re greeted with numerous options. Built into this amazing little bit of nds homberew software is a Calendar, Day Planner, Address book, ToDo List and even a scribble pad to draw or sketch little pictures or make notes using the stylus on your Nintendo DS.

My favorite function however is the built in mini web browser. We all know the DS and DSi have built in WiFi but no real browser to check out our favorite web sites on the internet. Thanks to the R4 DS Card and the DSOrganize software, you can now get online and start browsing the web effortlessly. While the browser is limited in this version, there are promises from the developer to improve it. At present its a basic browser, but one that can have you reading your news online in just seconds.

All in all, I find DSOrganize to be a fantastic piece of homebrew software for the R4 DS Card and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for unique and useful homebrew applications for their Nintendo DS.

Nintendo DSi owners are left out in the cold either. While the original R4 DS Card won’t work on your Nintendo DSi, the newest model of the R4 Card will in fact work and functions the same way. The R4i SDHC Card allows you to use all of the same homebrew games, applications, eBook readers and more right on your Nintendo DSi or DSi XL. All you have to do is make sure you purchase the right version of the R4 Card for your version of the Nintendo DS. If you have the regular Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite you can use the R4 DS Card or R4 SDHC Card. If you own the Nintendo DSi or DSi XL, then the R4i Gold or R4i SDHC Version will work flawlessly in your Nintendo console.
