Trimming Your Newborns Fingernails
With practice, anyone can do it.
Hugging and cuddling is different from cutting the fingernails of the baby and some parents are also scared to cut the nails of their babies. The parents do not want to hurt the baby and at the same time ensure that the baby does not scratch with the nails not cut. If the nails are not cut then there are chances of scratch marks on the face of the baby. The reason you see scratches on the face of the baby is because kids love to put their fingers around their face and they do not care whether it causes marks on their face or not.
To ensure that the scratching does not create unruly marks on the face of your baby, one must trim the nails of the baby on a regular basis. Some mothers think that having long nails for kids is stylish and trendy, especially for their daughters, but they do not understand the kind of impact it could actually make if used for scratching by the baby.
Once the fear of cutting the fingernails of the baby is gone, the parents find the entire process very easy. The nails of the new born baby are very soft and it can be trimmed with the help of nail files. If that is something, you do not find appropriate for your baby’s nails, then you can use a pair of clippers too.
The clipper used for cutting the baby’s nail should be specially used for the babies. Do not use the ones which you use for your nails. One way of softening the nails of the baby and making the entire cutting process smooth is dipping the fingers of the baby in water.
If you find it difficult to cut the nails of your baby when he or she is awake, do it when they are fast asleep. The entire process of cutting the finger nails is very painless and one can do it without disturbing the baby in its sleep and it would also be an easier way to cut the finger nails of the baby.
Place the baby on your lap before cutting their finger nails. Take the finger smoothly and try to expose the finger to the cutter and cut the nail later. Do not go overboard with the cutting and try to get rid of just the whiter portion of the nail. The sharp edges must be smoothed with the help of file after the cutting takes place. The finger nails should be trimmed once in a week and the toenails could be trimmed once in a fortnight as it takes some more time to grow.
If at all you happen to cut the flesh of the baby’s finger instead of the nail, then there is no need to panic. Just take a clean white cloth and place it on the finger of the baby. Hold it for sometime till the bleeding stops. Do not use a band-aid as it would not be very helpful and you might later find your baby sucking on the finger which is covered with a band-aid. This might look very difficult to the parent initially but later on, everything would fall in its place.
