Following the assassination of Caesar, Rome was to be rule by the Triumvirate of Mark Antony, Augustus Octavian and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. Cleopatra joined Mark Anthony to further her cause for Egypt. After Mark Antony had given Cleopatra a huge part of the eastern possessions of Rome and neglected to support Rome in other matters, Octavian declared war against the two of them. Augustus Octavian was a Roman rival of Mark Anthony. After Augustus Octavian defeated Mark Antony in the Battle of Actium, Cleopatra and Mark Anthony retreated to Alexandria and committed suicide.
