Schools are ideally, areas of safety, but history has proven this untrue. It is, in fact, no longer safe to assume that a school is “weapon free” and safe because children and teenagers now have full access to various weapons such as knives, firearms and other items that can induce harm to a person. A children’s school bag should contain learning materials and there is no place for a weapon anywhere in the classroom. However, since the numbers of violence and crime in campuses increase every year, school boards and directors have come to realise the need for installing metal detecting devices for the protection of the children as well the staff.

When parents send their children to school, they expect them to come home alive at the end of the day. To ensure the safety of everyone in school, there is a need to regulate the items brought inside the campus. True, the issue of violence is rooted to a deeper cause, however, the availability of metal detectors will somehow stop violence form happening. By detecting these weapons upon entry, we can safely say that the campus is truly “weapon free”.

The decision is not an easy one to make. School officials are actually debating among themselves but the need is true. With walk-through detectors installed in every entrance, all students, staff and visitors will be scanned for as they go through, for the presence of weapons. It may not be cost-effective, to install walk-through detectors, so many schools have chosen to use the handheld versions instead. It is used most of the time in major establishments like malls, airports and offices and it is required for the device to be waved all over the person’s self to detect any metal source. Handheld detectors are ideal for a school setting. It is less intimidating but at the same time sensitive enough to detect even the tiniest weapons hidden within a person’s clothes.

The decision to purchase the metal detecting device poses as the biggest conundrum. Once this is settled and as soon as you have purchased the device, the school officials have to decide on the rules on how to implement this new process. How often do you have to administer the checks? Do you randomly pick students? This decision is critical; otherwise, the whole purpose of having a metal detector will go in vain.

You cannot wait for an actual need for such device before you deem it necessary. Instead of having to deal with the pangs of violence that can spread school-wide, a metal detector can prevent violence form unfolding. It will be more than just a detection device; it will be an ominous threat that will intimidate would-be criminals from spreading havoc within the school premises. At the same time, it will help give the rest of the school a sense of security.

The responsibility of keeping the children safe while they are in school is on the school administrators. The instance of violence from happening in schools will successfully reduce is consideration is done on whether or not one should be purchased.
