Don Pepin Garcia Cigars

The American story of the original My Father cigar only began in 2003 when master cigar roller, Don Jose “Pepin” Garcia brought his family to Miami’s Little Havana and set up his own small shop, they began producing cigars of exceptional quality and flavor nearly from the start. His first cigar of note, Tatuaje, was made for Pete Johnson, and shortly thereafter, Don Pepin Garcia began to create their own cigars to the accolades of aficionados worldwide.

The My Father line was introduced in 2008 by Jaime Garcia, a gifted blender in his own right, to honor his renowned father, Don Pepin Garcia. The My Father line includes the #3, which received the lofty rating of “94” from Cigar Aficionado, when it was named 2009 Best Cigar of the Year. Together, father and son, Pepin and Jaime, are rolling out some of the world’s finest and most popular cigars. In this short period of time, they have produced some very fine smokes including Cuban Classic, Series JJ, Tatuaje, and 5 Vegas Miami.

Their slogan says it all in regards to Don Pepin Garcia cigars: They truly are “the art, tradition and style of Cuba.” The cigars produced by the familia Garcia are the very finest “Cuban” cigars that have been crafted outside of Cuba.
They incorporate the traits widely associated with the fine-burning Cuban cigars from the entubado-style bunching (accordion-like folding of the filler tobaccos) to the triple caps on the head of each cigar which produce the superlative burn and long-lasting finish Cuban cigars are known for. From the traditional packaging to the classic Cuban Vitolas, the proud Cuban roots of the Garcias are on display, even though politics has stepped in to move their locale.

The My Father blend is the first made of specially chosen tobacco binders and fillers grown at their own farms in Esteli, Nicaragua, a climate Don Pepin Garcia feels best reproduces the taste and feel of Cuba in his tobacco. It is also the first cigar they made which uses a Habano-Rosado wrapper grown in Ecuador by the Oliva Tobacco Co. of Tampa, FL.

Though a little veiny, the wrapper is deep, rosy milk chocolate color with an oily patina, but no soft spots on the cigar. The band is a piece of art in its own right with an elaborate “MF” (for My Father!) in a large cursive font with the family name of Garcia & Garcia under it. The rosy, almost salmon-colored background beautifully complements the auburn highlights of the wrapper.

The pre-light draw has a delightfully complex flavor-translated by some palates as that of cinnamon, and by others as honey and molasses. The aroma of this cigar is beyond compare. The draw is effortless and first-rate all the way through, and My Father produces a gratifying cloud of smoke.

The underlying earthiness maintains a subtle spice, but deepens into a rich mocha interestingly layered with wood, leather, and espresso. Midway through the My Father cigar a roasted nuttiness is tasted. Unusual for a full strength cigar, though, is the smooth creaminess that makes the My Father cigar so deep down satisfying.

That the Garcias’ company is now named “My Father Cigars” says it all when it comes to the talent, hard work, and excellence of both Don Pepin Garcia and his son, Jaime. The My Father cigar is recommended for those who like a moderate to full-bodied smoke. The complex flavors and aromatic creaminess make this cigar nearly universally well-liked.
