There are some dog owners who are not aware that Pomeranians have two coats. In some instances, the focus of owners is only on one coat – the long and fluffy overcoat, and they fail to care for the thick and short undercoat. For those having a first encounter with this cute fox-like toy dogs, finding the distinction between the top coat and undercoat may not be an easy task. We can compare this with a person who has long hair but with layers of short hair cut into it. When you brush the hair, you will not be able to separate the two. The same case is true with Pomeranian coats; they blend together and brushing will not separate them from each other.

Obviously, we have a lot of things to ask about Pomeranian fur. Most of which are related to fur loss. Poms are known for their fur, and you don’t want to end up with a pet pom with a tangle of ugly fur. You need to understand the various fur conditions and the important things that must be undertaken to address each of these conditions. Poms continuously shed off hair, and this is a normal condition. On the other hand, there is another fur issue that you can fix with proper grooming. Finally, there is the third fur issue, which is purely medical in nature, that will require immediate consultation with your vet.

You have to remember, that pet poms will not always appear like a ball of fluffy fur. While this is the primary reason why we decide to get a pom puppy as pet, it is important to note that Pomeranian puppies will go through a stage known as puppy uglies.

Puppy uglies usually happens when your pet pom is 5 or 6 months old, although there are cases where puppy uglies will happen as early as 3 months or as late as 7 months. Puppy uglies is a normal fur condition and is a natural part of the growing process. This fur condition can be characterized by uneven fur loss, which is mostly concentrated around the pup’s eyes. This may also come as several patches at the back of your pet pom. When you have puppy uglies, it is important that you use gentle shampoos and conditioners on your pet pom. Extra care must be observed when you have this fur condition in your pet pom as the skin is sensitive and unprotected because of the fur loss.

Aside from this normal fur condition, your pet pom may also suffer from other major shedding issues. Pomeranian will experience major fur loss when given anesthetics during a surgical procedure. Male poms will not experience major shedding problems when compared to female poms. Female poms will lose fur when they are in heat. They will also need up to 6 months for their hair to grow back their usual fluffy condition. Female poms will also lose fur after having their puppies. In fact, high stress conditions can also trigger serious fur loss in female poms.
Medical Conditions that Lead to Fur Loss

There are fur conditions that are related to specific medical problems. When you observe unusual fur loss, it is essential that you remain calm and approach the situation with utmost urgency. Certain medical issues can trigger major shedding. These include red mange, allergies, thyroid problems and alopecia. There are even serious medical conditions that lead to major fur loss and make the skin thin, discolored or brittle. It is extremely important that you seek the intervention of your vet if you notice unusual cases of fur loss in your pet pom.
