How to Avoid Flat, Dead and Lifeless Writing

Your writing is flat, dead and lifeless. Those are only three of the many adjectives used to describe the same thing: writing with no impact. If you’ve ever been told anything along those lines, you may want to look into ways to give your text that extra oooomph.

Sometimes, your mood affects how you write. If you don’t really feel your topic, then you will end up writing for the sake of submitting it. Writing without setting your heart to what your topic is all about will only costs you a lot of trouble.

The most common issue when you don’t really like your topic and can’t seem to understand it is that you can’t find enough words to write.

If that happens, how will you able to finish your content? Plus, the fact that its quality doesn’t even meet the standards.

Most writers don’t even notice that. As long as they can fulfill their duty in writing and come up with a finish one, then it’s okay. But honestly, notice how your content looks. Do you think it is healthy enough to be consumed by your readers?

In order to give life to what you write, you have to keep it interesting. That’s how you are going to hook your readers up. Writing an interesting content, even if it’s not a story writing, is a result of expressing your creative side or ideas and emotions about the topic that you are writing.

Notice your work now, is it really interesting? You probably need some guidelines or tips on how to write better. If you don’t have any writing strategy to make your content a successful one, you will most likely come up with dry, boring and lifeless writing.

Strip the fat. Too many unnecessary words can make your sentences and paragraphs sound stale. They’re fat that do nothing but weigh your writing down. Take it out and you’ll leave your work leaner.

Use precise nouns and verbs. Dwelling too much in general concepts and ideas is a valid way of writing. Don’t expect anyone to stay awake through it, though. If you throw in precise nouns and verbs as much as you can, however, you might have a shot. Try to get as specific and exact as you can, avoiding generalities that leave gaps for meaning.

Make your sentences active. Passive verbs are fine, but they create sentences where nothing happens. Active verbs, on the other hand, make them sound lively and vibrant.

Use a style editing software. Some of the more advanced writing software can help edit your work for style issues. It’s no guarantee that it’ll turn up more impactful work, but it can help.

Experiment. Got a different, edgy idea? Try it out. Most writing that falls flat do so because the author lets it stale. Dare to do something unfamiliar and you might come out on top.

Read your work objectively. Let a day pass before doing any editing work to give yourself time to cool down. That way, you can read your piece with an open mind, the way most of your readers would.
