In 1789, George Washington wrote the following words, which would become the basis for our U.S. Marshal program:

Impressed with a conviction that the due administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good Government, I have considered the first arrangement of the Judicial department as essential to the happiness of our Country, and to the stability of its political system; hence the selection of the fittest characters to expound the law, and dispense justice, has been an invariable object of my anxious concern.

Today the US Marshal program still exists, and it is considered to be the oldest federal law enforcement in the country. Such a job can be difficult to obtain, but that does not mean it is impossible! There are a few ways to find yourself in the position of a deputy marshal, but before that there are requirements that you will need to meet:

1. You will need a college degree, preferably in law enforcement, or at the very least three years of relevant experience. This could mean that you served in the military, or have law enforcement training of another nature.

2. Your criminal record needs to be fairly clean. A few misdemeanors are okay, but you should not have an felonies or violent crimes. There are ways to have your record expunged, but this is a very difficult process, and one that is not likely to succeed.

3. Be prepared to travel, and be prepared to work in strenuous conditions. The job of a US Marshal is not safe, and the job of a Deputy Marshal is no exception. You will be protecting judges, congressmen, and even federal courts.

4. You will undergo intense training that will involve federal procedures, surveillance, searches, and even witness protection.

The job of the Deputy Marshal is not an easy one, but if you feel you can do it, then you will find that you have chosen an extremely rewarding career. As far as the hiring process goes, the recruitment is managed through the Federal Career Intern Program.

There will be an interview process, and there will be quite a bit of paperwork. As far as jobs go, this is one of the most difficult to get, but at about $82,000 per year, it’s definitely worth it. Remember though that being a deputy marshal goes beyond the money. It is about that sense of gratification that you obtain when you know you have done something worthwhile.

You will protect and serve on a huge level, perhaps on a larger level than you ever thought you would. Are you ready to take on a commitment of this type?
