In The Company Of Angels: The Truth According To The Bible Verses

Angels.

Even today Angels are a mystery. It seems everybody, just about, has his or her own ideas about angels, though there are a few things about them that most people agree on in general. For example, many people believe angels have great wings sprouting from their backs. One of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s famous short stories is about a character finding a wounded angel with giant wings. I think this pretty much sums up modern society’s idea of angels, not counting their depictions on TV, the movies, and other forms of the visual arts.

Angels are also generally good. They are servants of God and played an important role during the events of the Bible. It’s how we believe angels to be. Angels are good, wear long white robes and perform their services to God. This is what we think about when we think about angels.

But what are Angels, really? What else is there we don’t know about angels that the Bible verses are trying to tell us? As it happens, we know about angels as much as we don’t know about them. We owe it to ourselves to read the Bible verses about angels so we could learn more about these mystical beings.

Here are some examples of Bible verses about angels.

References from the Old Testament:

“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.” (Judges 13:3)

“But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it not because there is not a God in Israel, that ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?” (Kings 1:3)

References from the New Testament:

“Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” (Luke 15:10)

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39)

According to the Bible verses, angels are God’s messengers. An angel is by no means a glorified human being, and according to Matthew 22:30 angels do not marry or give birth like us human beings. In addition ancient depictions also show that angels weren’t always perceived as having wings.

Apparently our view of angels evolved over time. But one thing is certain: angels are real and they exist in the service of the Lord. In the Bible they are mentioned 165 times within the New Testament and 108 times within the Old Testament.
