When you return, you access your emails and check to see if you have any urgent business communication from clients. Once that is done you go onto the internet for the purpose of doing some business research and this is when you start get distracted!

Oh but look, there is your Twitter page waiting for you to sign in and tweet about what you are doing. It will only take a few seconds to get that done. And you might as well have a quick look at the latest news headlines while you are online. It is amazing how distracted one can become just reading the news!

Before you know it an hour has gone by – during which time you should have been working, managing your internet business, but instead you have just wasted the hour. Now you are an hour behind and you are panicking that you won’t complete your workload before the end of the day.

Could you see this in your future? It might become a reality if you want to start running an internet business from home, but there are strategies you can use to cope with all the distractions.

Let’s face it we all know the internet is capable of sucking huge amounts of time out of our day. This might be okay in some circumstances but if you are aiming to run and grow a home business you need to ensure that your clients and suppliers come first. Temptation is always there however when you work on the computer and there is no one to monitor your every move, so it pays to develop ways to be strict with yourself.

Emails are a necessity if you work online. This is particularly the case if you correspond with clients and suppliers via email, as it is one of the easiest ways to get in touch with people quickly and efficiently. The trouble is emails can also be a major source of distraction, so you might want to limit the amount of times you check your emails. Every time you check them it disrupts your concentration and flow, and it could take a while to get started again. Perhaps the best way to do this would be to check your emails twice daily only.

The internet is another potential distraction that requires a lot more discipline to prevent it from encroaching on your working life. You will have to be very strict with yourself to ensure you don’t go into websites that you know will take valuable time away from your day.

Visiting a site just to check something very quickly can turn into a prolonged visit if you spot something else you want to read. Limit these visits to your lunch hour or to a tea break, set an alarm for ten minutes ahead of time or whenever you need to stop and get back to work. This should help you to become more aware of the time you are wasting.

In the end an internet business can provide various sources of income for those who are ready for it. But being online all the time can also work against you, and it is vital to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.

Are you going to allow all the entertainments and news online to constantly distract you from running a successful internet business from home or are you going to develop strategies to help you cope with all the distractions?
