Kitchen & Bath Christmas Decor

Kitchens and bathrooms seem to offer little opportunity for Christmas decor. These rooms serve very functional purposes, and the appliances seem to take up a lot of the decorating space. However, with a little creativity and simple swaps you can transform your kitchen and bath for the holidays.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, use your countertop, cabinets and space above your cabinets for your decor. Small, countertop trees can be decorated with a food or chef theme. Garland looks great on top of cabinets, and if your cabinets have glass doors you can display seasonal items or figures inside the cabinets. Christmas dishes or mugs displayed on a mug tree look great in the kitchen, and any figurine can be placed on your countertop.

Have your children cut Christmas decorations out of colored cardboard. The kids love making paper Christmas trees with tiny, multi colored ornaments. These homemade ornaments are great holiday additions to the refrigerator, dishwasher or kitchen windows.

Hang a couple of 3-4″ round ornaments from the lights fixtures, you can use fishing line to allow them to hang at different lengths.

If you are short on space, consider swapping out everyday items for functional yet festive ones:

-Salt and peppershakers

-Canisters

-Magnets

-Soap dispensers

-Mugs and dishes

-Towels

-Potholders

-Utensil holders

-Large utensils

-Rugs

Making these simple swaps is an easy way to cheer up your kitchen for the holidays without giving up valuable space. To complete your holiday atmosphere, light a Christmas-scented candle like cinnamon or spruce. Or better yet, brew some spiced coffee or bake some fresh Christmas cookies. Cookies will make your kitchen smell like Christmas and look great plated on your countertop. (Just don’t expect them to last very long!)

Bath

The bathroom usually gets the shaft when it comes to Christmas decorating. Don’t neglect this room. If you are adventurous, let the kids draw Christmas designs on the mirror. Your kids will love creating a giant Christmas tree outline, think of the smile your guest will have when they see themselves in the mirror with a tree outlining their face!

Like the kitchen, some simple swaps make a big difference:

-Soaps and lotions in holiday scents like gingerbread, vanilla and cinnamon

-Holiday potpourri

-Christmas towels

-A festive shower curtain

-Christmas shower curtain hooks

-Christmas books such as The Night Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Any or all of these switches make a big impact, especially in a small bathroom. However, if you want to go even further, here are some more ideas:

-Place decorations in corners of room

-Small items can be displayed atop the toilet tank

-Canned snow sprayed on edges of mirror

-Garland draped over the mirror

-Ornaments hung on light fixture with decorative ribbon

It may seem like nobody will notice your decorations in the bathroom, but the reaction is really quite the opposite. People expect decorations in other rooms of the house, so a holiday bathroom is a pleasant surprise. Don’t neglect any room in your house this Christmas; even those that serve a very functional purpose.
