I have just been put in charge of our cleaning company’s janitorial supplies. The previous one who did the purchasing didn’t do a good job and most of the supplies he purchased were either overpriced or was inferior in quality. My predicament right now is to do just the opposite of what he had done – save on our janitorial supplies purchases and get the best quality at the same time. In other words, I will have to look for quality, cost and availability of janitorial supplies for our company that can improve our performance and offer some savings to our clients as well.

The first initiative that I will implement is to buy in bulk. This way, I can get discounts from our suppliers and realize great savings because buying in bulk reduces the required packaging and reduces costs of labor. The suppliers can afford to sell their items at a lower price because of this. The bulk items actually contain the product in small containers that are the same as what you can find in regular stores. I can also ask other company to combine our purchases together and buy cooperatively. This would further reduce our costs on janitorial supplies.

We can save a lot of dollars on toilet paper by buying commercial toilet paper instead of the premium ones that come with lotions and fragrances. We don’t really need them do we? Commercial toilet paper comes usually wound with longer length than the ones we usually have at home. They are a lot cheaper but still soft enough and our employees are not likely to complain. I can also get some savings on soaps if we purchase those that come in bulk gallons instead of those that come in cartridges which can cost up to 4 times more. And instead of hand towels, we can get hand dryers so we can eliminate the need to replace paper towel dispensers and lessen our waste as well.

Our previous purchaser used to go to the supplier’s store, driving all the way out to where the store was and load the company’s truck with janitorial supplies. I plan to do away with this practice and just do our purchasing online. I have already found several online stores that offer the lowest price and best quality janitorial supplies such as glass cleaner, plastic cleaner, wipers and rags, as well janitorial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, floor sweepers, carpet extractors, etc. We could even make a little more money when our clients ask us to provide the janitorial supplies for the work we do for them by charging a small markup price for them.

I will make sure too that I buy our janitorial supplies from wholesale suppliers which frequently offer up to 30% discount off the retail price. What I want with these type of suppliers is the fact that not only do they offer substantial supply, they also carry brand name products that most janitorial service providers also use in their cleaning jobs.
