Philip Marlowe Private Eye

While this article is mostly about the Philip Marlowe TV series, it’s important to note that there was a radio series titled, “The Adventures of Philip Marlowe that ran from June 17, 1947 through September 15, 1951. It starred Gerald Mohr as Philip Marlowe for the majority of its run after a brief stint with Van Heflin in the role. Other main characters included Parley Baer, John Dehner, and Virginia Gregg, among others.

All the story lines for the radio and TV series were set in Los Angeles and were based upon the short stories of Raymond Chandler.

The first Philip Marlowe TV series ran for one short season from October 6, 1959 through March 29, 1960. It starred Philip Carey in the role as Philip Marlowe.

Philip Marlowe Private Eye is one of the best British detective series that aired in 1983. This particular series was also aired in the United States from the 16th of April in 1983. The show ran successfully for three years and came to an end on June 3, 1986. Powers Boothe played the role of the lead character, Philip Marlowe. The show has the distinction of being the very first drama series that was produced for HBO.

The work of private detective Philip Marlowe was showcased in the Philip Marlowe Private Eye TV show. This particular series was aired between April 1983 and June 1983 as two short runs. The second set of short runs started by April 1986 and came to an end by June 1986. Powers Boothe played the lead role as Philip Marlowe, while the two other lead characters Annie Riordan and Lieutenant Violets Magee were played by Kathryn Scott and William Kearns.

Philip Marlowe Private Eye was nominated for few awards. In the year of 1983 and 1987, it was nominated for the Cable ACE Awards; the first one was to be awarded for Actor In A Dramatic Presentation and the second was for Actress in a Dramatic Series. The first one was received by Powers Boothe while the recipient of the second was to be Kate Reid.

In 1987, Philip Marlowe Private Eye as a series was also nominated for the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Cinematography. In 1986 it was nominated for the Gemini Awards for Best Writing, Best Photography, The Best Pay TV Drama and also The Best Music Composition Awards. In spite of all these nominations, it did not win any awards, but it surely did win a lot of hearts over at the United States and The United Kingdom.

The first season of Philip Marlowe Private Eye was released in the year of 1983. The first episode was called The Pencil and was directed by Peter Hunt. The second episode called The King in Yellow was directed by Bryan Forbes. Director Sidney Hayers came out with Finger Man, the third episode, while David Wickes came out with the fourth episode called Nevada Gas. The final episode of this season was directed by Peter Hunt again and was called the Smart Aleck Kill. This last episode was aired on the 15th of May 1983.

The second and the last season of Philip Marlowe Private Eye was aired in 1986. Allan King was the director of the first episode called Blackmailers Don’t Shoot while Robert Iscove directed Spanish Blood, the second episode of season two. The third, fourth and the fifth episodes were also directed by Robert Iscove while the last was directed by Martin Lavut and was aired on June 3 1986. The very last episode of this amazing series was called Red Wind.
