Recreation Heaven: Yellowstone National Park

Geysers and Hot Springs

There are certain areas throughout Yellowstone that are more abundant in regards to natural geysers and hot springs. The most popular geyser in Yellowstone is known as “old faithful.” If viewing geysers is something that sounds fun, then you might consider staying at the Old Faithfull Inn, a hotel overlooking the “old faithful” geyser. Don’t visit the Old Faithful district in Yellowstone without stopping to see the Firehole River. This river is always topped with steam created from the regions geothermal features.

White Water Rafting

Traveling with an adventurous group? White water rafting down Yellowstone’s various waterways will satisfy any adrenaline junkies’ needs. Different companies and guide services offer white water rafting packages throughout the park. The average cost for a 2-3 hour rafting tour is $50 per person.

Backpacking and Hiking

Get a work out in on your vacation by taking a hiking or backpacking day trip. Yellowstone is home to over 2.2 million acres of open land with thousands of hiking trails. Call the park ahead of time to inquire about different trails. Many trails close during the winter months due to bad weather conditions. Guided backpacking tours are also offered by private guide companies.

Fishing

Fish is only available in the park during the summer months. Bodies of water with Yellowstone can only be fished from sunrise to sunset. The park sells their own fishing permits and anyone over the age of 16 must have one on their person at all times. Trout are the park’s native fish and must be released if caught. Fishing guides are available and will take groups to popular fishing spots throughout the park.

Snowmobiling

Looking to do something in the winter? The park offers over 200 miles of trails that allow snowmobiles. Snowmobile guide companies offer guided tours through various areas of the park. The snowmobiling season usually starts in early November. Guided tours don’t give tourists as much freedom as non-guided tours, but you will be able to see sights that the common person wouldn’t come across.

Winter Wildlife Tours

Guided tours are a popular in the park because they allow tourists to see a large portion of the vast park. Tours range from bike tours to wildlife tours. Take a wildlife safari during the winter months around the Jackson Hole. Tourists will be shown hundreds of different species of wildlife, a myriad of plants and trees and learn about the geological composition of the land itself.
