The Akiles CoilMac ECI Coil Binding Machine and Inserter – A Review

Binding with coils is a great way to produce eye-catching documents that are perfect for a variety of uses. There are a lot of coil binding machines available but there’s one that really stands out: the Akiles CoilMac ECI. This is a terrific machine that has a lot of offer and, of course, there are a couple of things that could be improved. Let’s take a look at this device.

Strengths:

* The CoilMac has a decent punching capacity and is able to punch a maximum of 17 sheets at once. If you use paper that’s slightly thicker or thinner, the capacity will go up or down. You can even punch cardboard that’s up to 2.6 mm thick so you’ll be able to have sturdy covers.

* This machine has a maximum punching length of 13 inches so it’s perfect if you want to work with paper that’s a little bit larger than 8.5 x 11″ (letter-size). There are 5 disengageable dies so you can work with paper of different sizes. There’s also a margin depth control feature you can use to end up with sturdy books that both look great and have tear-resistant pages.

* As for the holes themselves, they’re circular and appear in a 4:1 pitch. That means 4 holes per inch are punched along the edge of the paper. (If you need a device with a 5:1 pitch, you can special order another version of the CoilMac that produces that pattern.) You’ll need to use coils with the appropriate pitch. Selecting the right supplies for the job will be easy because this machine has a coil selector you can use.

* This device can bind documents that are up to 7/8″ thick so you’ll be able to produce some rather lengthy books.

* The CoilMac’s coil inserted is operated with a foot pedal. This will enable you to bind your documents in a flash, especially since your hands will be free to hold the book as the coil is inserted. After you’re done inserting the coil, you can crimp the ends with the included crimping pliers. (The inclusion of the pliers is a nice touch because they’d set you back about $50.00 if you needed to buy them yourself.)

* This is one of the most durable binding systems you can buy. It has metal parts and was engineered to provide you with years of use.

* For peace of mind, the CoilMac comes with a one-year warranty. However, this machine is so well-constructed you may not even need the warranty.

Weaknesses:

* Although this device has a 13-inch punching length, it would have been nice if Akiles had made it 14 inches. Then you’d be able to work with legal-sized documents.

* This machine’s punching mechanism is operated manually while the inserter is powered by electricity. If the punch was electric, you’d be able to get more done in less time.

As you can see, the Akiles CoilMac ECI has a lot of great features even as there are a couple of things that could be improved. Overall, this is a terrific machine and a wise choice if you’re interested in coil binding. If that’s the case, consider getting this machine for your office today.
