The Value And Uses Of Gold At Present
Back in the day when we were still in school, our Science teachers have asked us to memorize the Periodic Table. And the amount of time and effort spent on doing so was to ensure that we have the answers ready when the exams come. Back then, we never seemed to appreciate the idea of memorizing let alone being familiar with the symbols of the elements. All we knew back then was gold is used in a number of things that we still require and make use of until today.
As one of the most precious and marketable elements at present, gold comes in different forms for use. The most common and primary use is in the form of jewelry. Gold jewelry can be in a way of investment since the higher gold concentration jewelry has the more valuable it becomes. Jewelry is a valuable asset in exchanging cash for gold when money comes short in the pocket. In making jewelry, gold is mixed with alloy to make it more durable since higher concentration can make it more malleable and therefore easy to break or melt. Another form of its usage is as for financial purposes. We all know that most banks are somewhat dependent on the amount of gold they have in reserves. The creation and movement of money involves valuation of gold, making a currency in demand or short of supply. Another use of gold is in the manufacturing of electronics. Devoid of corrosion and an excellent conductor of electricity, gold strands are used in the connection of joints and wires of a mobile phone and a computer’s internal components. Gold is being used in smaller quantities in making equipments and electronic devices work on a superior level and lengthening their lifespan in some way.
Among other things, there are two uses of gold that I can fondly remember and recall and these are in medals or anything that serves as a symbol of status and achievement and gilding. The medals that are given to achievers are symbolic, composition and technicality. As gold is the most valuable element in the Periodic Table, it is fitting to award it to people who have the highest achievement. Lastly, gold is currently used for gilding, a decorative technique used to accentuate solid surfaces for a golden finish. Champagne flutes, furniture and even buildings make use of gold gilding as both accent and prevention from corrosion.
As I look back, I can still remember my childhood days that we had a complete set of gold cutlery, another use for the precious metal. And we were using it on a daily basis without any regard of its value or on its effect to our health. Until one day, one by one the cutlery went missing. It was when I was older that I realized its value, that you can get cash for gold when you sell them. But it was too late for me and my parents to realize the possibility. Until now, I just shake my head and wondered what happened to the spoons and forks.
