Travel to Surf?

The typical surfer dreams about riding a perfect wave. To make this dream a reality, some surfers travel to the ends of the earth in search of that wave they have so often dreamed about. After traveling around the world looking for the perfect surf there are many tips for surfers that may not be experienced in surfing travel.

Destination

The right surfing destination is key to a good surf session. Even the best surfer can show his skills on a two foot swell. With this being said, there are certain countries that offer significantly better surfing than others. Wave consistency is what makes a good surfing destination great. Some of the countries with the most consistent waves include: El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, France, Spain, Portugal, Sumatra, Bali, Sumbawa and New Zealand.

Travel Necessities

Only bring what you need when traveling to surf, especially if you are flying to your destination. If you are going to be at one destination for over a month it is recommended that you purchase a surf board when you get there. This may seem extreme but it beats the alternative of buying a new surfboard before you go only to have it damaged in transit. Airlines do not treat surfboards with the most care when handling them. If you have multiple surfboards it is suggested to travel with the smallest and least valuable one.

Weather

Surfing can be done in all weather conditions (except lightening of course) but good surfing happens in great weather conditions. Plan your surfing vacation around the weather if possible. Research your destination climate and what time of the year is the best to surf. Make sure to go for more than a week so that you are guaranteed to have at least a few days of good surf.

Traveling with Other Surfers

Traveling with other surfers can be a challenge if everyone has different expectations. If you are going to travel with surfing buddies then make sure that the whole group is at the same level of surfing. It will create a problem if one wants to surf baby waves and another wants to surf monster swells. Traveling with other surfers can be advantageous because there is much money to be saved when sharing accommodations, especially when it comes to beach destinations.

Local Knowledge

Make friends with the locals once you get to your surfing destination. These people know everything about your surroundings. Finding locals that surf may tip you off to hidden surfing heavens. Befriending locals can also benefit you when you need a ride to these surfing hot spots.
Back-up Board

It is always good to have a back-up board in case something happens to the one you plan on using. If you don’t want to travel with two boards then be sure to find a place where you can buy a new board if need be. There is nothing fun about traveling to surf and then not being able to when your board is damaged.

Happy surf traveling!
