Used Volvo – The Joys of Camping
When you were growing up were you the kind of family who liked to go on camping trips? Or maybe you preferred luxurious holidays abroad, where you could relax by the side of some azure infinity pool or stretch out on a plush towel on blazing white hot sand? Alternatively, maybe you preferred cosy cottage holidays, where you had all the scenery of the rural countryside, just without quite the same level of exposure to the elements. Perhaps your family didn’t even really do holidays, preferring instead to stay at home and make the most out of having all your home comforts quite so close to hand.
If you weren’t from a camping family, then I am inclined to think that perhaps you missed out. Sure, I have no doubt that the sun was beautifully hot aboard, and that the cottages offered just the right combination of comfort, cosiness and quaintness. However, I honestly believe that in terms of getting close to nature and feeling completely relaxed, nothing beats camping at all.
When we used to go camping, we had a huge old tent that required at least three of us to hold various bits up, whilst someone, generally myself or my sister, were sent into the deepest depths of the tent to attempt to put the pole up. As team building exercises go this one was pretty darn good, and despite the inevitable argument that would sometimes ensue, we knew that putting the tent up depended on all of us! Then, once set up, we would cram all the many belongings that we had transported to the campsite in our battered used Volvo into the tent. It was a squeeze, even though it was technically a four person!
The best thing about camping, for me, was the early mornings. You always wake up early thanks to the combination of the daylight shining brightly through the tent walls, and the birds who are waking up with a chorus of squawks and songs. There is something about those hours, where all you can here is nature and all you can smell is the fresh dampness of dew that always makes me feel at home. I think for evermore the sound of a wood pigeon cooing will be able to transport me instantly back in time to being wrapped up in sleeping bags and blankets and waiting for the world to wake up. Oh, and the sound of zips, that brilliant and distinctive zipping noise that you will hear from all corners of the campsite, as everyone opens the doors to let in the day.
Less commonly, I think rain is one of my favourite things whilst camping. As long as you have some form of illumination of heavy rain storm can be brilliant. You sit in your waterproof room, listening to the rain battering on the roof – and we always used to play a long and satisfying game of Monopoly to help the day go by.
They are simple pleasures, undoubtedly, but I think that is what makes camping so enjoyable.
