5 Great Tips on How to Write a Book

Writing a book and becoming a published author is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. A book is the ultimate written expression of your thoughts, ideas, knowledge and individual creativity. Having said that, it can also be time consuming and a bit frustrating when you can’t think of what you want to say. That’s why it’s good to know some tips on how to write a book.

First of all, I want to commend you for taking the time to seek out pointers on how to write a book. You see, there are lots of people who dream about book writing, but won’t even get this far. So, this shows that you already have a serious intent to begin working on a book.

Okay, so here are some tips to get you started:

Know Your Topic Well

As a first time book author, you should write about something you’re already familiar with, or have a passion about. You, the author, must be completely comfortable with the subject matter, which ensures that your thought process and writing will go a lot smoother.

The book writing process is really about the skill you use to express your thoughts about a particular topic, and how you artfully put those thoughts into written form. So, if you already know a lot about your topic, writing will be a way easier for you.

Choose a Great Title for Your Book

When you browse the books in the bookstore, or online, you’ll notice there are a large variety of titles in every genre. Because there are countless word combinations that you can use to create your book title, it can all seem a bit overwhelming.

Yet, this is one of the most important parts of your book, and you want to make sure you do a good job at it. A person’s eyes will tend to gravitate towards a title that jumps out at them. While a book that has a plain title can easily be overlooked. The competition for readers is fierce, so you need a catchy title if you want your book to stand out.

Create a Book Outline

If you want to make it easy on yourself, then write out exactly what subjects, or story ideas, you want to cover in the book. This is called a book outline. Your outline will feature the main chapter headings and then several subheadings underneath each one of those. An outline takes the mystery out of the writing process, because all you have to do is fill in the blanks.

Write One Chapter at a Time

Following your outline, break each chapter into three parts and begin working on the first section of the first chapter. It may be a little challenging in the beginning when you are working on that very first paragraph. But, my advice would be to not think about it too much. Just write down whatever words flow from your brain. You can always go back and edit later.

Once you’ve written that first paragraph, then allow yourself to just keep writing until you feel you can’t continue. Eventually, your brain will have its fill of dreaming up various words and phrases and you’ll reach a natural stopping point. Don’t force yourself to continue beyond this point or you’ll get burned out.

Remember, writing requires a fresh mind so that your ideas can flow effortlessly.

Proofread Your Work

After You’ve written a chapter, go back over it and read it as objectively as you can. You’ll notice that certain phrases will stand out to you as not being quite what you had in mind. This is where you’ll correct spelling and grammar errors, while tweaking what you’ve written to make it read better.
