An Introduction to Ballroom Dance Steps

The second position is called closed position in which both partners face each other standing about six inches apart. The shoulders are in a relaxed position and man’s right arm holds woman just below her shoulder. Her arm rests upon the right arm of the man and her left hand holds his left hand. Both her hands should be equal to the level of the eyes.
The third important position is called right parallel position. In this position, the feet of the woman are on the right side of that of the man. The shoulders of both partners face each other. However, the right hand of the man holds the back of the woman.
The forth position is left parallel position. It is quite similar to the third position, but quite opposite of it. The left hand of the man’s hand holds the woman from her back. Next position is promenade position in which both partners stand with each other in such a way that the right side of the man touches the left side of the woman.
This position is also called semi-open or half open position. The man holds right hand of the woman with his left hand and his right hand holds waist of the woman partner. These positions are essential before learning ballroom dance steps.
Some of the ballroom dance steps that must be learnt with these positions are ball change steps, kick ball, lock steps, grapevine and sailor steps. These steps are fundamentals in learning ballroom steps. A true ballroom dancer knows not only basic positions, but also knows all these basic steps, for without learning these steps, it is impossible to start ballroom dance.
