Does Teeth Whitening Hurt?

This is a popular one and a question that gets discussed in the teeth whitening world as people want white teeth but do not always want to get high levels of sensitivity.

The challenge we have is that all our teeth are different and unique and therefore there is not a direct answer to this question and in some ways until you have had teeth whitening you are not going to know. You can plan for the worst but sensitivity with teeth whitening is a lottery and is very difficult to predict who will get any pain.

Many times someone who might suffer some sensitivity when biting an ice cream might not feel a thing with teeth whitening and then someone who have never had any level of sensitivity with hot and cold foods and drinks might get sensitivity with whitening.

But let us put this is to context and that if we are going to get some sensitivity it will only be for a few days and then it passes for good. There is a very good chance your teeth will get quite white after the treatment and therefore if you do get any sensitivity the results from the whitening will last longer than the pain!

The sensitivity will occur when the whitening gel normally peroxide based will travel deep in to the tooth’s enamel and aggravate the nerve endings shocking them and this is what causes the discomfort. Not everyone will get any sensitivity and to be honest for a brighter smile is actually a very price to pay to get a nice looking smile.

If you have had whitening done before and got sensitivity then there are some options to minimise the chance second time if you are looking to brighten them back up to their original whiteness. These include the following:

Using a lower strength gel – the gels range from 5% to 35% and by reducing the strength will reduce the chance of sensitivity but not necessarily reduce the results of whitening. Sometimes by using a lower strength gel for longer period can work quite well with no detriment to how white the teeth will look.

Less time – if you are using a light based system then just spend less time under the light and this will result in a lower chance of sensitivity. If you are using the trays to whiten the teeth then spend less time with them in the mouth.

There are different peroxides with carbamide and hydrogen being the most popular. Hydrogen peroxide is much stronger but will increase the chances of sensitivity greatly but carbamide will not so this is also worth knowing so you have another option.

Always speak to your Dentist as they will also have a view on what to use etc but sometimes they are slight bias towards their own system and method!

So lets keep positive as you might not even get any sensitivity with whitening and if you do then i am sure it will be worth the new smile you have earned!
