The sinking of the passenger liner Titanic in 1912 has captivated the world’s imagination spawning major movies, dramatizations, books and discussion during the past 98 years. The exhibit was created by a Titanic expert, G. Michael Harris, who was determined to create a tribute to the Titanic that would really place its visitors “on board” the ill fated passenger liner. It is more than museum, because it employs professional actors and actresses in period costumes who portray and tell the stories of the now-famous passengers and crew many of whom perished when the Titanic sunk. These “crew members” take you on an hour-long guided tour of the Titanic that will make you think that you have traveled back in time.

The exhibit has spectacular recreations of the main areas of the Titanic including her Grand Staircase, First Class Parlor Suite, Boilers, and Promenade Deck. When you enter the exhibit you are given a ticket which has the name of one of the actual passengers on the 1912 voyage. And at the end of the tour, you get to see whether you are one of the ones who were saved or were among the many who were swallowed up by the cold waters of the North Atlantic.

The experience is so real, that many visitors are moved to tears by it. In addition to the main on-deck areas of the ship, the exhibit also features an Underwater Room where a replica of the Titanic is shown as she sits on the bottom of the Atlantic today.

The exhibit also contains artifacts and historical treasures as well as movie memorabilia from the films about the Titanic, including the James Cameron film, Titanic. Older Titanic fans will probably remember earlier dramatizations of the ship’s sinking, and they will find original movie memorabilia from such films as “A Night to Remember,” starring Kenneth More, and “The Search for Titanic,” hosted by Orson Welles – as well as a costume worn by Leonardo DiCaprio in the most recent Oscar-winning motion picture “Titanic.
