Getting Back to Nature in South Africa
Nowadays, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of a busy life and forget that sometimes the most valuable times are those when you can relax, smell the roses and experience a rejuvenating brush with nature. A holiday to South Africa is a wonderful opportunity to get out into the great outdoors and get a little closer to the joys of our natural world in a variety of different ways. Whether you’re looking for solace and serenity, or a taste of animal antics, South Africa is one place which has everything you’re looking for.
Safari Adventures
Embarking on a wildlife safari is synonymous with a holiday to South Africa – and for very good reason. There are many different adventure companies who will take you out into the parks and deliver you up close and personal to some of the most famous wildlife on the planet. No matter whether you have the budget of the Aga Khan, or are taking the low road on the backpacker route, there is a safari adventure which is right for you. Your ideal safari may include a luxurious stay in a five-star lodge with cocktails at six and the ultimate world-class spa treatments; or it may be bumping through the South African bush in a rackety old land cruiser with a water bottle tied around your neck. But however you choose to meet the wildlife of South Africa, it will be an introduction you’ll never forget. Just don’t forget your camera.
Walk the Walk
Anyone who has hiked any of South Africa’s many walking trails which criss-cross the country will attest that it has one of the most diverse landscapes in the world. Within a relatively small area you can walk through sun kissed bush, along windswept and rugged cliffs, and through lush, fertile wine lands. The Eastern Cape of South Africa is renowned for its spectacular beauty which encompasses the world-famous Garden Route, hiked by thousands of visitors annually. In contrast, walking in the Drakensberg Mountains, slightly more off the beaten track, will reveal a completely different face of South Africa; with a jagged mountainous landscape and an abundance of flora. Whilst the infrastructure for recreational walking in South Africa is extremely good, it is still an unspoilt destination which allows you to immerse yourself in the true beauty of the natural world. Don’t forget your hiking boots.
Getting Sandy
Boasting some of the best beaches anywhere in the world, South Africa is the ideal country for a get-away-from-it-all beach holiday and you can still find a deserted beach where you can wander for hours without meeting another soul. But getting back to nature can take on an entirely different meaning if you want it to. If you’re staying in Cape Town, or just passing through, and feel like indulging your inner-naturist, you can head to Sandy Bay – South Africa’s premier (unofficial) nudist beach. As well as its beautiful white-sand beach and sparkling turquoise waters, Sandy Bay’s backdrop of the majestic Table Mountain makes this a beach well worth visiting. If you can brave the chilly water it will be an exhilarating, not to mention liberating, experience. Don’t forget your suntan lotion!
