Internet Marketing For Beginners: Looking for the Best Online Marketing Advice?
If you’re anything like me, you’re always reading blogs and advice from internet gurus. When I can’t sleep, I fire up my laptop and read until I can’t keep my eyes open. Given all the information out there, it’s often hard to know what to do. The beginning learning curve for internet marketing can seem pretty steep. The toughest part is all the distractions. All of us would love to know exactly what to spend our time doing while avoiding actions that just don’t deliver results. However, I’ve learned a few lessons that bear repeating.
My first piece of advice is this: Go through the whole process yourself before over-spending or outsourcing. There is a sequence of steps that is nearly universal in internet marketing. The steps are:
1. Find a niche or market (preferably one that is profitable.)
2. Create a website or online presence.
3. Market your website.
4. Monetize your website.
5. Expand your main site and/or rinse and repeat the process with new sites.
Although this is obviously an oversimplification, it’s important to get experience in each of these areas. While going through each step, you will be learning valuable skills. And, more importantly, you will be learning not only about your strengths and weaknesses, but also what works and doesn’t work for you. After completing this process, you will have a better understanding about when to outsource and where to spend your money.
If you skip ahead to outsourcing everything, you could end up out of money without any tangible results for your efforts. For example, you might decide to buy a link package from an online link broker. After the links are in place, you could easily discover that they don’t really bring you the right kind of traffic that translates into profits. Or, you might discover your outsourced link campaign didn’t help your ranking in the popular search engines. At least for your first site, it’s advantageous to do as much as you can by yourself. This way you can test and evaluate the results. Knowledge is power.
The second piece of advice is to “do one more thing.” In the long-term, the marketers who do one more thing than their competitors reap greater benefits. One more thing a day can add up to 365 more pages of content or 365 more links pointing to your site. Think of it like muscle building or strength training. That one extra repetition can be the tipping point that takes your body to a higher level of fitness. Also, you never know when you’re going to stumble onto a powerful, repeatable strategy. By adding or trying one new approach per day, you’ll likely find a few tricks of your own that deliver significant results.
So, go through the entire process of launching a website or marketing campaign. Don’t give up until you finish each step. Afterward, take a look at your actions and evaluate their effectiveness. There’s no substitute for experience. Secondly, implement the “one more thing” strategy. It just might be the component that makes all the difference.
Good luck out there.
