Keeping Your Home Cool When It’s Hot Outside

Now that winter has come to an end and we have nearly a year before we have to start thinking about heating costs again it is time to start thinking about how to keep our homes cool when it is hot outside. With summer just around the corner it won’t be long before we are blessed with those balmy summer nights that we all love so much. But aside from those beautiful warm summer nights there are also some pretty hot ones and keeping cool can be pretty difficult. While in places that are warm year round such as Florida many individuals have central air systems to keep their homes cool those individuals living in places such as New York or Maine often do not. That does not mean though that such places do not get hot enough to need central air, only that the concentration is often more on heating in the winter and getting a break from huge electric bills for a few months. There are other ways to keep your home cool though without having to install an expensive cooling system and without having to pay for an extravagant cooling bill all summer long. So if you are one of those people lacking central air or if you just want to save a little money on your cooling bill this year just follow these tips for keeping your home cool when it is hot outside.

– Keep Lights Off – You would be surprised at how much heat the lights in your home can put out so it is important to keep them off if you do not need them. It would also help to invest in lower wattage or energy saving bulbs as they do not put out as much heat. Paying attention to this will help you to keep your home much cooler this summer.

– Cook Outside – Everybody knows how much an oven and stove can heat up the house and how quickly too. You should try to cook outside on your grill as often as possible and especially on extremely hot days in order to keep your home cooler. For things such as vegetables it may be a better idea to use the microwave rather than the stove to cook. Whatever you can do to keep the stove and oven off will help to keep your home cool.

– Leave Windows Open At Night – If you grow accustomed to leaving your windows open at night and closing them during the hot days your home will stay much cooler. So many individuals make the mistake of letting all the hot air in during the day and then having to find a way to cool it back down.

– Use Dark Curtains – Using dark curtains on really hot days will help to keep the sun from filtering in and heating up your home. You could also invest in a dark shade to use with your normal curtains so that all you have to do is simply close the blinds when it is hot outside.

We could all stand to save a little money during these times. Keeping your home cool without having to always use an air conditioner is a great way to do that and with these tips you can do it too.
