Moving Day Has Finally Arrived

It seems like it has taken forever to get to this moment. This day is always a blur in my mind. The many useful tips in this chapter will help you get through moving day without losing control of the situation and getting frustrated.

Introduce yourself, your family, and your pets to the moving personnel when they arrive. Since moving companies like to get started early, make sure someone is home to meet the movers and point out which items are to be loaded onto the truck. Clearly identify any items that should not be loaded on the truck, and put them in a special place with a visible sign on the following items: vacuum cleaner, broom, ladder, survival box, packed suitcases, box of shoes, etc.

Give the driver and the crew a tour of the house and yard when they arrive. Show them the way around your property and tell them about any special items that are nor to be loaded onto the truck. This is a good time to ask questions about the loading of your furniture and boxes. Note that the driver is the person in charge of the move. Go directly to him or her if you need any help on moving day.

Get plenty of rest the night before moving. Moving day is the most stressful day of all in the moving process. Even though the movers usually plan on having the truck loaded by 5:00 or 6:00 P.M., the job can take longer due to inclement weather or unforeseeable events. Therefore, it’s best to plan on the job taking several more hours than scheduled. If you are moving out of town and traveling by airplane, stay in a hotel on moving night and fly to your destination the following day. If the truck’s loading schedule is delayed, you will avoid penalties associated with changing your travel arrangements.

Reputable moving companies will place moving pads, mats, cardboard, or clear plastic on the entrance floors, in the hallways, and on the stairs. Pads should be hung over railings to prevent damage.

If you are not able to get a babysitter and must have small children at the house on moving day, remember to keep children sate. This means out of the truck, off the truck platform, and away from heavy items being moved. Children can be seriously injured if they are running around and playing in unsupervised areas. Keep them safe by providing strict rules about where they can play on moving day.

Put your pets in a secure place so that they do not get hurt or lost on moving day. Dogs and cats should be wearing their identification collars.

Being prepared on moving day can save you time, money, and energy and make this hectic day less stressful.

I had lived in Boulder, Colorado, for three winters and had never experienced weather this cold in my life. Of course it was moving day! The movers were frozen and could hardly lift the furniture and boxes. It took twelve hours to load the truck when the loading was scheduled to take only eight. The movers could not wear gloves because it would prevent them from getting a firm grip on the furniture. So they had to do the job barehanded and take many breaks to warm up their frozen fingers. This type of unplanned situation can happen to anyone when moving. Therefore, it is always wise to assume and plan that the job will take extra time, and be thankful if it is completed as scheduled.
