Moving Tips
Protect Important Documents

– Last will and testament and living trust
– Insurance policies: auto, recreational vehicles, life, homeowner’s, and renter’s
– Stock certificates, stock option agreements, and savings bonds
– Medical records
– Certificates: birth, marriage, death, and religious
– Passports
– Motor vehicle certificates of title
– Appraisal documents
– Computer inventory diskette
– Computer financial records diskette
– Undeveloped film or CD of household inventory
– Irreplaceable photo negatives
– Social Security cards and documents
– Title policy and property deed
If you organize your belongings before you move, you will have an easier time finding items at the new location. You will be able to locate critical objects when you need them instead of going into a mad panic looking for them. More importantly, the moving company will be able to provide a more accurate estimate for the cost of your move if you are organized, and that may result in substantial savings to you.
– Put photos in chronological order in photo boxes or in acid-free photo albums. (Store away from light, heat, and humidity.)
– Place home videos, DVDs, and music CDs in video boxes or on a shelf.
– Store computer software CD-ROMs and diskettes in a box or on a rack.
– Place miscellaneous nails, screws, tacks, picture hooks, etc., in your toolbox or in a plastic container with small compartments.
– Store children’s daily school papers in a large plastic box. (Preserve children’s artwork in an acid-free box or briefcase. Label and store it in a dark closet.)
– Organize your memorabilia collection so that it is displayed properly.
– Sort recipes. Type miscellaneous handwritten recipes on the computer and then print and lile them in a three-ring notebook. Then file the recipes you cut out of magazines in this notebook. Buy plastic page covers and insert each page into your notebook to keep recipes clean and orderly. II you want to be even more organized, type a table of contents page and place it at the beginning ol your notebook so you can locate recipes more quickly.
– Streamline your closets. Closet specialists say the goal is to make space visible, accessible, and manageable. Think of the saying, “Out of sight, out of mind.” It applies to your closets and drawers loo! If you can’t find something, you won’t use it.
– Dispose of clothing that no longer fits and put seasonal clothing in plastic garment bags, boxes, or a cedar cabinet in the garage, basement, or attic.
– Organize your shoes and shoe-boxes. Label your shoeboxes or take your shoes out of their original cardboard boxes and place them in clear acrylic shoe boxes.
Store toys in large, clear plastic storage containers, in a toy box, or in a closet.
Arrange your gift-wrap supplies and seasonal decorations in plastic storage containers, then place the containers on a shelf or store them in a closet.
Organize your books and magazines. (Recycle old magazines and unwanted books.)
Collect household appliance manuals and warranty information and store in one kitchen drawer, or put them in a three-ring binder, or place them in a filing cabinet or box.
Sort your closets, drawers, and pantry so that items can be easily located.
Purge and clean your medicine cabinet. Throw away all expired medications.
Thoroughly clean your refrigerator and freezer at least every six months. Dispose of food that is moldy, past its expiration date, or that no one will ever eat. Keep your refrigerator clean and smelling fresh. Food will look more appetizing if the refrigerator is not cluttered.
Organize your garage, basement, and attic. Discard items that you do not need.
