Anyone who knows anything about vacuum cleaners is familiar with the top names in the business llike Kirby and Dyson. These vacuum cleaner manufacturers guarantee their vacuum cleaners to be lightweight and easy to use. They say they will navigate around tight corners and pick up dirt in those hard to reach places. They will remove dirt and debris from almost any type of carpet, all without damaging the carpet.

Famous name brand vacuum cleaners will suck up dirt, debris, food particles, and money from your wallet. In order to own one of the top of the line name brand vacuum cleaners you are going to have to give up at least five hundred dollars of your hard earned money.

The Shark Navigator vacuum cleaner may not have the name brand recognition that other manufacturers enjoy, however they cost just a little less than half their price. But does it do as good a job cleaning your carpet as its more famous kin?

If you could see the Shark Navigator pick up pet hair from the carpet, you wouldn’t need to ask. Because it weighs just 15 pounds, it is easy to push and maneuver. There are no bags to contend with, the Shark Navigator uses a filter system that needs to be cleaned out only twice a year. It also has a five year warranty, which is the same as the Dyson model. But is it better than the Dyson Model?

I would have to say no. The truth is when you compare the two vacuum cleaners side by side there is virtually no difference in cleaning ability, ease of use, and warranty coverage. The only discernable difference is the price. Dyson vacuum cleaners cost around $500 dollars while the Shark Navigator costs about $200.

People do sometimes pay more for some products for several different reasons. The biggest reason is that the quality of one product is perceived to be superior then the one that costs less. Sometimes perception does match reality, and sometimes it does not.

Another reason people choose to pay more for one product over another one is for a symbolic show of status. To own the highest priced product of anything is a way to show others that you belong to the upper class of society, and you will accept nothing but the best.

If a person wants the peace of mind that comes with the perception that the higher priced product is superior in quality, or if they just want to show friends and family that they own the most expensive top of the line products, I have no problem with this at all. But for me, if product A costs $500 and Product B costs $200, and they have pretty much the same functions and performance, I am going to buy product B because I want to keep a hold of that three hundred dollars. If a friend visiting my house sees a lower cost vacuum cleaner and then sticks their nose in the air and tells me “I have a Dyson”, I am just going to smile and say “That’s Awesome!” Then I am going to pat my wallet and smile.
