What is sleep aponea? Sleep apnea is a common and dangerous sleeping disorder. Basically, sleep apnea is a condition wherein a person experiences involuntarily pauses in breathing while sleeping. If you have ever observed a person sleep normally, you would notice that breathing is linear. The intervals between inhales and exhales are only a few seconds away from each other. This can be considered the normal state of sleep. However, if you are suffering from sleep apnea, this will not be the case. Most of the time, your breathing will be fine and normal. But every now and then, you will suddenly stop breathing. After a few seconds, you will then gasp for a bigger chunk of air. If you have sleep apnea, there will be at least a 10-second interval between your apnea episodes.
So why is sleep aponea bad for you? Many people mistake sleep apnea for snoring. These two are very different. Snoring is less dangerous than sleep apnea. This is because snoring indicates that there is only a partial blockage of your airway while sleeping. This is what creates the noise. Since you still have the ability to breathe in and out normally, it means that the blockage is only partial. With sleep apnea, it’s different. Each apnea episode you experience entails a total closing of the airway. This means that for a few seconds – every time you have an episode – you lose the ability to breathe involuntarily. When this happens, the level of oxygen in your blood decreases by approximately 3% to 4%.
There are basically two kinds of sleep apnea. The first type is obstructive sleep apnea. The obstructive variant of the disorder is the more common type. As the name suggests and as mentioned above, this type of sleep aponea is due to obstructions in the airway. The obstruction may be due to a muscle blockage, meaning throat muscles relax and weaken. This is common while in a sleeping state. People with upper respiratory infections experience this often. To avoid oxygen desaturation of the blood, one must take preventive measures. The good news here is that this kind of apnea can be prevented. This can be done by throat muscle toning, alcohol avoidance and sleep repositioning. All you have to do is strengthen your throat muscles by talking more, avoiding drugs and alcohol that can relax muscles, and changing sleeping positions so that your muscles don’t fall towards your throat.
The second type of sleep apnea is central sleep apnea. This variant of the disorder is a lot more severe and hard to cure. This is because the apnea episodes are caused by the central nervous system itself. To put it simply, central sleep aponea occurs when your brain’s programming for involuntary breathing is askew. This occurs mostly in people with heart conditions, more specifically atrial fibrillation. This type of sleep apnea is associated with the breathing disorders periodic breathing and Cheyne-Stokes respiration.
