South Africa – Walking With Wildlife
Walking South Africa’s magnificent landscape is the best way to not only explore the wonderful scenery, but also to immerse yourself in the warm and engaging culture of the local people. Hiking through the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains, wandering the picturesque Garden Route, or simply strolling along the waterfront at Cape Town; no matter where you choose to spend your time walking, South Africa will not disappoint.
But if, like many others, you are drawn to South Africa by the lure of coming face-to-face with some of the incredible wildlife of the country, there are some surprising opportunities to mingle with the local animal population.
Breakfast with a Baboon
Maybe not the prettiest animal that comes to mind when planning an animal encounter, the baboon certainly has personality plus. Baboons are deemed the most humanlike of all the primates and it is their propensity to human behaviour which makes them such a fascinating study. Although you’re not likely to come across a baboon while out randomly walking, South Africa has the perfect way to meet these creatures in the company of trained professionals. With tours taking place just outside the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, ‘Walking with Baboons’ guides the visitors through the beautiful Cape Fynbos area, and right into the habitat of a troop of baboons. With your expert guide you will be able to study the behaviour patterns and lifestyles of these wild animals and learn some more about their, sadly, endangered existence.
Mingle with the Meerkats
Who hasn’t looked fondly at a meerkat on TV and wondered, “Are they really that cute up close?” The good news is that they are. If you’re not scared of an early start, a guided ‘Walking with Meerkats’ tour through the habitat of these delightfully busy little creatures could be one of the most rewarding days you spend walking. South African meerkats rise early and leave their burrows to take in some sun before their industry for the day begins. The meerkats are used to human presence and are not fazed by their giant two-legged visitors. Ever-vigilant to danger around the group, there is always a sentinel on duty at the highest point of the habitat who warns of approaching danger. So easy are the meerkats in the company of humans, they have often been known to use a startled tourist’s head as the high point of the landscape – so be warned!
Laze with the Lions
If you want to play with the big boys, then a guided lion walk may be the answer while you are in South Africa. Walking with lions may sound a little intimidating at first, but the tours are run by trained, professional gamekeepers who take no risks when it comes to your safety. The lions used in these programs are well-accustomed to humans and you will walk alongside both adults and cubs as they go about their daily activities. It is an amazing way to experience the African bush landscape and you will be able to observe the lions in a truly authentic environment.
