Tinker Bell “A Tinkling Fairy Tale”

The word Fairy draws our imagination to beautiful heavenly beings with wings to fly and bringing us help, happiness and good fortune. Tinker bell nicknamed Tink is such a character created by J.M. Barrie for a play in 1904 and thereafter in a 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy. Initially Tinker Bell was only a side character- a common fairy, with exceptionally attractive looks and a cute figure. Tinker bell caught the imagination of all fairy lovers and she was launched in a Walt Disney picture Peter Pan, this animated incarnation was an instant hit and her popularity soared to such an extent that she is also known as an unofficial brand ambassador of the famous Walt Disney Company.

In the original play and novel, Tinker Bell is a fairy who fixed damaged pots and kettles similar to a real tinker. The sounds she made is of a tinkling bell which was construed to be her dialogue. Only those who are familiar to fairy language could understand her speech. This tone is the inspiration of her famous name. In her animated character, a trail of twinkling pixie dust follows her appearance. Her unique personality is of varied extremes sometimes bad tempered and revengeful and at other times very helpful and kind. She can make others fly by sprinkling her magical fairy dust on them.

In movies, Tinker Bell’s role was played to perfection by Virginia Browne faire in Herbert Brenon’s 1924 version of Peter Pan, Julia Roberts in 1991’s Hook and by Ludivine Sagnier in P.J. Hogan’s 2003 adaptation. Walt Disney describes her as a youthful Blonde with big blue eyes and a fair complexion. She is attired in lime green outfit suggestively short and green slippers with white puffs. There has been strident criticism that her features and dress are sexually explicit. However, her super stardom could not be denied and her name and fame soared among the audiences of her performances. Along with her success, the commercial exploitation of the brand image of Tinker Bell was on display, as her cute & beautiful image flashed across commercial advertising campaigns.

Tinker Bell has brought a financial bonanza for a range of products and the market is flooded with all kinds fancy utilities with her name attached. Like shoes, clothes, beddings, Coloring pages, toys and almost anything. The biggest financial beneficiary is obviously Walt Disney, who also has a float named after her.

Apart from these, there are Television Series & video games, and we can go on and on about this wonderful fairy. We must be grateful to the creator, J.M. Barrie. This beautiful fairy is one of the biggest success stories in modern history or can we say a “Tinkling Fairy Tale”
