Behavior Based Safety

Behavior-based safety is a phrase that describes the ability of an employee to choose a safe behavior over an unsafe one while carrying out his duties. Many accidents in the workplace can be avoided if employees take adequate measures as and when due such as wearing their heat resistant gloves. Behavior-based safety is a principle guided by correct behavioral decisions taken at an appropriate time. There are three basic safety variables which when combined can adequately eliminate accidents in the workplace. These variables are; the person, their environment and their behavior. The person component depends on the capabilities of the employee to carry out his duties in an efficient manner devoid of errors. It includes the employee’s physical abilities, training and experience in what he does. The environment component consists of all engineering controls and equipment put it place to ensure a safe working environment. It also includes job task and work culture employed in the workplace to ensure safety. The third variable, behavior which is often taken for granted is what an employee does and the decisions he makes in the course of carrying out his duties.

Behavior-based safety seeks to analyze and improve the safety behaviors of employees. It is a process of constant improvement on safety measures and attitudes. The analysis of different individuals while they work is an important aspect of behavior-based safety. Employees should be assessed periodically on safety measures and decisions taken while they work with their heat resistant gloves. Proper information on the performance of each employee should be documented and noted. Employees should then be corrected or advised on safety aspects to improve on. Aspects that such an employee should improve on should be spelt out and future assessment should be based on such improvement aspects. Assessment should be based on proper percentage scoring as this aid in the proper observation and progression of employees.

Employers should adequately analyze the safety behaviors and decisions employees take while carrying out their duties with a view to assessing the effectiveness of such decisions as it affects safety of the individual and his fellow employees. The behavioral decision an employee takes in the course of his duties goes a long way in determining the safety of such an individual especially in hazardous environment. To improve successful behavioral features in individuals, employers should assess employees periodically and provide incentives in the form of rewards to high scoring employees in an assessment program.

Workplace safety encompasses different aspects, all of which work together to eliminate accidents and workplace hazards. The use of proper safety clothing and equipment for example is one aspect of workplace safety that cannot be overlooked. Every employee needs to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure personal safety while carrying out his/her duties. Personal protective equipment includes clothing, shoes, headgear and heat resistant gloves amongst others. Using PPE in the workplace assures employees of immediate safety and work is carried out with confidence and aplomb even in the most precarious of positions. Workplace safety is guaranteed with PPE which gives the user confidence to do his duties in a very effective manner.
