Considerations to Contemplate Regarding Metal Buildings

The most common images that are generated when the term metal buildings is mentioned is of large arenas and skyscrapers. But fewer people are likely to recognize that much smaller buildings can also be made from metal. Houses and sheds, for example, are also candidates for being made with steel. The reasons for using metal as a building material are numerous.

By far the most common material that is used, other than concrete, is wood. For hundreds of years it was used because it was available plentifully. Only recently has metal started being used, particularly because it required advanced technology to manufacture it, which has only lately been developed. But it is popular now because it is so strong. There are numerous disasters which can endanger a building, but metal is more likely to withstand such dangers.

The environmental impact is more minimal when using steel instead of wood. This is not to suggest that there is no effect from mining for metals. But the impact will be concentrated in a smaller area. Cutting down trees has the additional effect of causing global warming, since trees absorb carbon dioxide which causes temperatures to rise. There is also the fact that it is easy to recycle steel after its use has been completed. In contract, there are not many things that wood can be made into after its function is completed.

One reason why many people shy away from using metal when they construct their building is because it is more costly. But at the same time, one must consider that metal can be made to form shapes that one cannot make with wood. Curves, for example, are possible with metal, so that architects can plan shapes that are interesting and capture attention, instead of the usual boxes. Also, if cost is a factor, it must be remembered that when parts of the building need to be rebuilt, the steel which has been used can be recycled. This means that rebuilding costs are much cheaper.

There are safety considerations which make steel a desirable choice of construction material. The breaking point of metal is a lot higher than wood’s or any other material’s. Actually, before metal breaks, it will bend. This is significant because if there is any damage in a metal building, a long length of time will elapse before it collapses. As a result, repairs can be undertaken long before any significant damage happens.

One can reduce the amount of energy used to regulate temperature in metal buildings. In winter, buildings will need to be heated, whereas in summer buildings will have to be cooled. Metal can be used to circulate hot or cold air out, and keep the opposite kind of air inside, depending on what is required. Therefore, little energy is required for warming or cooling the air.

Metal is very popular in the post-modern era. Metal is attractive because of the way it shines when light is reflected off of it. People who walk past the building are bound to notice it, whereas other building materials look ordinary in comparison.

Metal buildings are very desirable because of their quality. Such a building is guaranteed to last a long time, and to be visually appealing at the same time.
