Controlling Your Office Supplies Spend

Out of all of the things that one would think of to save money for a business office supplies is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. However, numerous business owners and managers are beginning to realise that office supplies are quickly becoming something they have to keep an eye on.

To the average employee things like stationery seem to just always be there. They don’t have to give a thought about how it got there or who paid for it. The employee will not worry about how much stationery they use, because they know that the company will always supply. If you are in the position of owning or operating a business though, you need to consider changing this mindset.

The first step that you can take is to stop buying name brand office supplies for your office. Believe it or not, the own brand products nearly always do just as well as their name brand counterparts. You may even be able to strike a deal with a small start up company that can get you your required stationery and other office supplies at a discount. You would be doing them a favor, and they would be doing you a favor.

Another logical step is to do some comparison shopping. Typically you are going to just have one supplier of your office supplies. Therefore, it is wise to do some price comparisons on a variety of products that you office is going to need. Just because one supplier happens to have the best rate on stationery does not mean that they have the best rate on all of your needs as a whole. If you do some basic internet research then you should be able to quickly determine which supplier can get you the best rates on everything.

Keep in mind that price isn’t everything. You need to make sure that your supplier of choice is also one that is going to reliable and provide you with the quickest and best service. In this industry, consistency is king. You have to have a company that is going to religiously deliver your office supplies on time. Getting a supplier that can provide for the occasional emergency need is even better. You never know exactly when the office will run out of stationery.

Managing the budget of a business is a complex and difficult process. Whenever the economy gets rough it becomes increasingly difficult. Looking for places to make cuts and be a difficult process that can have long lasting effects on people. If you are having to lay off employees, then you may be changing lives. Instead of always having to do this, try to see if you can’t cut a little fat out of the supplies budget. Explain to the employees the need to maintain control over this area of spending. When they realise that they may be saving their jobs or the jobs of others, they will tend to pay more attention. In the end it is all about creating a better and more effective office environment.
