Creating the (Im)Perfect Wedding Table Plan

Creating a wedding table plan is easy. No matter what people tell you about it being stressful and trying, it’s really rather fun. Creating a wedding table plan will only take you a few minutes, and then you can forget about it, happy in the comforting knowledge that everything will go smoothly. Really, why do people worry? After all, creating a wedding table plan isn’t a military operation – it’s simply a friendly and convenient way of helping your dearly beloved family and friends find their seats a little more easily. No problem at all. Nothing to it.

The best approach is to grab a sheet of paper and a pen, and quickly sketch out the room. Don’t worry if you haven’t been there for a while, or when you visited you were in such a state of excitement you really didn’t pay much attention. Really, what does it matter if your room layout is slightly inaccurate? The odd foot here, the odd door or window misplaced. There really can’t be too much harm done by forgetting exactly how many cubic feet the room is, can there?

Once you’ve drawn out the room, guess roughly how many tables you need, what size you think the venue might be able to provide, and then draw them out in any pretty pattern that seems pleasing to you.

Next, grab your guest list and simply start at the top and work your way down, positioning people in interesting places. Those boring ex-neighbours you felt obliged to invite – stick them on a table far away from you, and as your cousin Norbert is almost always going to start telling everyone at length about his newt collection, stick him as far away from you as possible too!

If you still have a few spare minutes before last orders, why not have a little fun, and create one table (heart shaped?) and place all of the single people on it! How sweet – you get to play cupid at your own wedding! They’ll all be ever so grateful to you, and will almost certainly invite you to all their weddings.

Unfortunately you will find the odd guest who has to pull out at the last minute, or admit to having a bladder problem and needing to sit near to the toilet, or the odd guest who failed to send in their RSVP until the last minute, long after you assumed they wouldn’t be coming. If this happens you can just cross out a name, add a new one in or even squeeze an extra chair onto one of the table you already have. No one will mind – after all, it’s a happy occasion, and everyone will be gracious enough to let you enjoy it.

If you’ve read as far down this article as this paragraph, and you’re still nodding your head wisely and agreeing with everything, then perhaps it might be wise to delegate the task of creating a wedding table plan to someone else? Not one word of this article (except for this paragraph) is even remotely accurate or true, yet even so many couples do many of the things mentioned here. For the sake of your wedding, your happiness and your guests, if you ever find yourself tempted to do anything in this article, seek help and advice, or at the very least, read a few wedding table plan scare stories – there are many to choose from!
