David Bowie – A History of ‘Space Oddity’
David Bowie wrote “Space Oddity” in 1969, to be issued the single. It was the first Bowie song that made reference to Major Tom, a fictional astronaut. “Space Oddity” was released on the album “Space Oddity” (Phillips, 1969), and the BBC used it as the soundtrack of the lunar landing retransmissions.
David Bowie resume the character of Major Tom on the tracks “Ashes to Ashes” and “Hallo Spaceboy”.
After leaving the label Dram Bowie signed with Mercury Records, Philips in the UK, in 1969, and contacted George Martin to produce her next album. Matin Tony Visconti rejected him and accepted the offer, but for the song “Space Oddity” delegated to Gus Dudgeon, although an early version of “Space Oddity” and had appeared in a promotional film entitled Bowie Love you till Tuesday.
The single with the new version produced by Dudgeon was published on July 11, 1969, coinciding with the Apollo 11 moon landing. It was an instant success. Was recorded at Trident Studios in London on June 20, 1969. The single was on the B side to the track “Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud.” The reissue of 1975 gave two items instead of the face B, “Changes” and “Velvet Goldmine.”

In Italy, Equipe 84 group had published a version of “Space Oddity” with great success, what he did to David Bowie to record his own version sung in Italian. He called it “Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola”, with lyrics by Mogol.
After more than 40 years of its publication, “Space Oddity” is a generational anthem, one of the key elements of pop, and one of the best songs of all time. The song was awarded the prize in 1969 with Ivor Novello Award.
Thanks to “Space Oddity” Bowie’s second album is known for its name (published as “David Bowie” in the UK, like their first album, and received the name of the song for its 1972 reissue by RCA, and since it is known by this name).
In December 1972, Mick Rock shot a clip of Bowie performing “Space Oddity” during the sessions of “Aladdin Sane”, which was used as a promotion in the U.S., in 1973, due to its reissue by the label RCA. Since its re-launch, “Space Oddity” reached number 15 on the Billboard USA Chart and became Bowie’s first hit in America. Then it would be used to promote the reissue of 1975 released by RCA in the United Kingdom itself, which became a # 1 in November.
There is another single version of “Space Oddity” carved on the program Year 1980 Kenny Everett, with “Alabama Song” on the B side.
On July 20, 2009, “Space Oddity” would be reissued in digital EP format, with four different versions, and published the song. This issue coincided with the 40th anniversary of the moon landing of Apollo
U2 are used “Space Oddity” on her concert tour Tour 360. It’s the last song playing environment before the start of the group, and again during a short interval of animation during the concert.
“Space Oddity” sounds in the film credits Alan Wake 2010, on the soundtrack of the brilliant CRAZY, and is to be performed in the video game Rock Band 3.
“Space Oddity” is 2001, A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick, but in song. A marvel, and the beginning of a new musical era.
