Decorating a Home to Reflect Your Individualism

Nobody wants their home to be generic and bland. Even those living in dwellings built according to identical plans like condos want to stamp their own personal touch so that they will be able to tell their unit apart and really call it their home. Individual differences in home decor tastes practically dictates that no two homes will look completely alike. Individuality gives any home a sort of personality and this is what makes some homes interesting. Your own personality – your preferences, your background, your lifestyle – all show in the decorations you use in your home. Setting it up just the way you like it is also a good way of making any living space comfortable. Now, who wouldn’t want to live in a home that not only has artwork hanging on its walls, but is itself a work of art?

Figuring out the design elements and features you like is the crucial first step in making your living space truly unique. This is, of course, easier to do for those living alone than it is for families. An individual living alone has only himself or herself to please. Sharing common spaces among different individuals each with his or her own unique preferences, on the other hand, will inevitably lead to compromises being made. However you arrive at a final consensus, be sure to go with what you really like. You cannot remodel every year so whatever theme you go with has to be livable for everybody. Once you are done with that decision, then it is time to draw up a budget.

When you do get around to actually redecorating, start with larger pieces like furniture and area rugs. Many believe that true individuality lies in the trinkets and accessories that people use to express themselves – and to a point, this is true. However, there is no rule saying that larger pieces cannot convey your personality. After all, the attention of your guests will almost always focus first on the larger pieces. A flower shaped rug can be an eyesore for a guest. But guess what? They will be looking at it for a few days at the longest. You will look at it every day. If that oddly-shaped rug gives you pleasure whenever you look at it, it gets to stay – no matter how much your guests may hate it.

Contrasting textures is a sure-fire way of bringing originality and your own distinctive style to your home. Using polished accessories alongside matte surfaces will do just that. The contrast different rugs make with hardwood floors also introduce points of interest. Use different combinations of textures in different rooms. Have the room owner try out different combinations for himself or herself.

You are not confined to using textures when decorating. As far as individuality is concerned, your imagination is the only limit. Experiment with lines, textures, patterns, colors and don’t be afraid to mix and match to suit your own preferences. Have fun. You cannot go wrong if you yourself make the rules. Make little changes at first and this will inspire you and give you confidence to take on bigger projects in the future.
