Decorating With Leather
Decorating with leather, in a sofa, area rug, or accent pieces, can create many looks. When trying to effect a more modern look through the use of leather, the tendency is to integrate a black leather sofa or chair into a space. However there are many other tones and styles that can create a modern look just as well, while adding more color and spice to a room. There are also a few rules of thumb one should follow when decorating with leather.
First and foremost when decorating with leather, take into account the fact that a leather piece usually stands out within a room and its color tends to dominate the space it is in. Given this fact, it is imperative to integrate other colors into the room, thus bringing balance to the space you are decorating. Black leather furniture has a tendency to dominate a room, so using other colors in a rug, drapes, or walls, will help minimize this. Of course selecting colors that do a good job of complimenting black will be your best option. In the effort to maintain balance, keep in mind that leather pieces usually create a fairly masculine look. To soften this look, integrate things such as soft, plush throws, fabrics in softer tones, and accent pillows. Finally, since most leather pieces are mono-tone, adding a pattern to the room will help enhance the feeling of balance. Striped patterns, tribal prints, and even animal prints will work very nicely with leather furniture.
Often overlooked when attempting to integrate leather into a room, are leather rugs. Unlike a more modern black sofa, the right leather rug can not only create a modern feel but also add an element of warmth as well. Leather rugs often come in natural shades of brown which enhance the feeling of warmth. Shag leather rugs are also a fantastic way to liven up a room and usually come in a wide array of colors. Cowhide rugs and animal print rugs are also very popular. While the common belief is that this type of rug can only be used in a western or rustic themed room, they can tie in very nicely with a modern theme. Another great way to integrate leather into a room is with the use of accent pillows. Like shag leather rugs, leather accent pillows come in many colors and styles. Along with leather rugs, it is not recommended that you use them with a leather couch or chair, but they look great when contrasted with fabric upholstery.
Using leather furniture and accent pieces is not only a stylish approach to decorating a room, they are also very easy to maintain. Simple chemical solutions and a little elbow grease go a long way in cleaning and maintaining leather furniture. More extensive damage such as cracks and tears can easily be repaired by a professional as well.
By keeping these basic principles in mind, you will be well on your way to creating the look you desire with what is a very unique and bold material.
