Have a Piece of Cake and Eat it Too – How to Decorate Cakes the Right Way
Coating plays an important part in cake decorating. Decorating the cake is surprisingly quite simple, if you know how to do it correctly. One of the problems though, is that people give frosting recipes but will not tell you how to decorate a cake with the recipe, or how to use the icing. Here are a few quick tips how to create unique cake decorations with icing. Before you start do decorate make sure the cake is cool all around and the inside as well. Here is a not so well known secret that beginners stumble upon, work with the cake while it’s on a turntable, which will give it an even look. Mix the icing till it is a little runny, so it will spread easily, and not chunky. Start by positioning a big amount of frosting in the center of the cake. A big problem that many run into at this point is how to keep the icing from getting crumby from the cake. That can be easily accomplished by simply moving the spatula along on the icing without the spatula actually touching the cake. After the center and top are fully covered in icing, turn around the spatula toward the inside of the cake, and smear toward the center to remove any overindulgence of icing falling off the side. Now it is time to decorate the sides, which is done pretty much the same way the top was done. Start off by putting icing on the side toward the top of cake, and go all around the cake. Next smear down the icing toward the bottom as smoothly as possible, without the spatula touching the cake. If the spatula touches the cake it becomes trickier to cover it up, and it will make the icing chunky. Now we have the cake all covered in icing it is important to make sure that the edges are very smooth. It will take some trial and error to get that right but eventually you will learn to do it like a pro.
Decorate with fondant
Before decorating a cake with fondant you need to spread some butter cream on it. Purpose of the butter cream is to even out the peaks and valleys of the cake. Put the butter cream in the fridge to harden it somewhat. At the same time start kneading the fondant with your hands. After kneading the fondant till it is somewhat soft, roll with rolling pin until it is about a quarter inch thick. Roll it out till it is spread slightly wider than the cake. Pick up the fondant and put it directly on the cake. Smooth out the fondant by starting from the center of the cake, then work your way to the edge and then the sides. After you have smoothed out the fondant all around the cake and it is spread out evenly, you have some extra fondant, just cut off the rest with a knife or scissors. Now all you need to do is decorate the fondant: Easy.
