Portable communication devices and the internet’s mainstream use are at least fifteen years old, but only in the past few years has the technology’s potential been fully realised. Everyone knew the internet would change communication, even if the full dimensions and shape of the change were hard to grasp. The marriage of internet connectivity to wireless devices, the growing sophistication of the devices themselves, and the ever expanding repertoire of applications has truly exceeded early speculation concerning the extent to which technology would change the lives of the everyday consumer.

Cell phones and Cameras

Cell phones impact was exponentially increased when they began incorporating more and more gadgets. Not only could your phone play music, but you could buy music online. Not only does your cell phone have a camera, but the pictures could easily be shared with distant friends immediately. Perhaps at first this seemed like a gimmick, but quickly the cameras got higher and higher resolution. They even had zoom technology. What was once a cumbersome means of communication became a sleek gadget with built in phone music player and camera.

Laptops

Following the general trend, laptops have shrunk in size and increased in power. The decrease in weight makes it especially portable. In addition to all its primary uses as a computer, the laptop has become a docking station for all portable devices: cameras, phones, ipods, recording studios, editing boards, and more. Before it was a tremendous benefit for the average consumer to be able to have access to this power, but the advances in this technology have made them portable, and therefore even more useful.

Ipods and Iphones

Iphone/Ipod technology is the most beautiful, most advanced piece of technology on the market. It can really be called an incarnation of the internet’s power since it is developing at a rate even faster than most people could dream of. Yes it has a powerful camera, connects to Itunes for a fully integrated music experience, but where it really excels is in its use of applications. Anybody is free to design a program (or “application”) that they think will be useful. There are thousands and thousands and most of them are extremely affordable. Ranging from guitar chord finders to resources for emergency doctors in hospitals the usefulness of these devices is hard to overstate. This is especially true since they are growing everyday and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Ordinarily, once something has been built its usefulness has a ceiling. But for the first time, a piece of technology has been designed to harness the full power of the internet while utilizing global creativity. The result is a device with unlimited potential.

Technology used to improve independently. A device would be issued and gradually technology would improve it. The biggest change isn’t in the improved power and shrinking size, but the thorough coordination allowing for so many different devices to interact. These days, everything is powerful, small, quick, and connected to everything!
